It might be worth pointing out for those that haven’t seen it that the 1996 TV movie is on Youtube in it’s entirety, if anyone feels like knocking out an entire Doctor in one sitting!
Movie is not bad – except for Eric Roberts as The Master.

Has anyone seen the movies from the 1960’s with Peter Cushing as The Doctor?

I don’t get the dislike of River Song either - she’s a strong character. Amy was a bit anaemic I thought.
River’s too perfect, knows too much about the doctor (especially with her cute “spoilers”), and a romance between the doctor and her was literally shoehorned in (and that’s not even going into the fact that the doctor should not even like her type of character).

I’ll agree with you on Amy. She was just kind of meh. Not a lot of personality besides being Scottish, and she was not a real good audience surrogate (which is what the companions are suppose to be there for). I thought Amy’s Choice was a fairly good episode though, might be her strongest one.

Amy jumped the shark starting at “Let’s Kill Hitler” when she seems to be pretty ok for having just been kidnapped during an entire pregnancy (not to mention made aware only during labour) and having her baby kidnapped. It’s a fun show, so we don’t want to see a full blown combination of postpartum depression and PTSD (which would be realistic), but she seemed almost apathetic toward the whole thing.

Oh, there’s spoilers in this post by the way.

I agree, plenty of light and dark in River, that’s part of the attraction. She’s smart and funny and quite able to hold her own instead of always needing to be rescued. Also agree she has her standards, quite strict ones actually.

My favourite Amy Pond episode was ‘The Girl Who Waited’ (I think that’s the name of it anyway). The way she was able to survive in the ‘kindness’ facility for 40 years. The way Rory had to choose between old Amy and young Amy and the way old Amy was locked out of the Tardis at the end - thought about that for ages. Which one was real? Were they both real? Did Rory do the right thing? Caused great arguments… errrr discussions in this house. 😃

There are other doctors besides David Tennant? 😉
Yes. Especially Jon Pertwee. 😃
Best companion was Rose, although I do also like Roary… The worst by far of the revival is River (who is Moffat’s Mary Sue character who I can’t wait to never ever see again).
I was not fond of Rose, because I saw her as Davies’ Mary Sue. from his time, I preferred Donna or Martha as companions.

That was the problem though, the Doctor’s always been a bit of a pacifist, include Matt Smith’s 11th, but he seems to be particularly willing to overlook anything River does for no particularly good reason (apparently “they’re in love”, but they’ve never really given a good why for that either besides “it just happened, accept it”. Which again, leads me to call River a Mary Sue character).

Tom Baker was pretty good too. I got a chance to watch Genesis of the Daleks, which might be the best Dr. Who serial/arc ever.

Well, if you exclude the part where she got trapped in a parallel universe which seemed to scar her a bit at least. She also did cause the 9th Doctor’s death, and she wasn’t exactly good at a lot of things (failing pretty badly in The Christmas Invasion).

If there was anything, it was harder to spot in the RTD era because the focus was on the Doctor (in my opinion, where it belongs). That’s one of the things that bugs me about the Moffat era, is that the Doctor has really become a side-character (along with Roary) in (what’s effectively become) the River and Amy show.

Has anyone seen the movies from the 1960’s with Peter Cushing as The Doctor?
I have seen at least one of them in the past year, although I don’t remember much about it. I’ve also watched the first season of the original BBC series.

To me, it just isn’t Dr. Who without Tom Baker or his scarf. He really seems to have owned that role. And the Doctors who have followed him are working within a paradigm he created to a large extent.

It’s a shame Tom Baker hasn’t had much of a career after that. That seems to happen a lot to television actors, I guess.

I rented Pasolini’s “The Canterbury Tales” (1973) just for the novelty of seeing Tom Baker in a role other than Dr. Who but the movie was so excruciatingly awful I had to turn it off before he even appeared.

I liked Peter Davidson’s doctor too. I had been watching repeats of the older Baker ones for a while, got hooked, then they started showing current, Davidson ones on public television here. After that I lost touch with the series. Apparently there were at least four more incarnations before they put the show to sleep.

Another reason they dumped Gallifrey in the new series is that while it sounds like a fantastic, incredible place that you want to learn more and more about, the reality is that when portrayed on screen, a stagnant bureaucracy who’s core belief is to do virtually nothing at all is very hard to write for, and it almost never lived up to expectations when it appeared in the old series. This is why we’ve only ever seen one glimpse of the Time War. It will always be a million times better in our head than anything that could be filmed, and it adds a whole new layer of mystery back into the show.

I’m obsessed!! Who’s with me?
Well, it takes all sorts to make a galaxy, your grace. 😉

Who didn’t say: “The angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection.” It was:
  • Sarah Jane Smith
  • Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart
  • Adric
  • K-9
  • Leela

I’ve really only seen the New Who too.

The first episode I saw was “Father’s Day” and it was about halfway through. At first I thought it was some Harry Potter episode with those black things flying around, I had no idea what was going on. When I saw Eccleson I was thinking “He’s a doctor? He looks like a villain or a thug” and I really thought he was a medical doctor, lol. But I really liked that episode, but always forgot to watch it.

Then I saw promos with Tennat and I remembered I had seen him a bit in a show that was funny so I was excited and I the first episode I saw with him was “The Girl in the Fireplace”.

Then my bros and I decided to watch from the first episode with Eccleson.

I like Rose, she is not perfect which makes her more human. Even though I like her chemistry with the Doctor and the love story, I don’t really see why he would fall in love with her. It’s a weird clash in my mind, I guess I like the Doctor to just stay unattainable.

Donna - “Runaway Bride”, I hated Donna in that episode so I was not looking forward to her season, but oh my goodness I grew to love Donna. It’s so sad that just as she was coming into her own, it all ended. Really wish there had been some more episodes with her.

I guess Tennant is my favorite from the Doctor’s I’ve seen, and I really like Matt Smith now, I think he’s got his Doctor down, I like Smith more than Eccleson.

I’m tired of Amy, if it wasn’t for Rory she would be so annoying and I think they screwed up River’s character. Please be done with the Ponds!

I really like some of the older Who episodes, I was watching one with Omega and it had a few of the doctors together and I can also see the charm of Tom Baker, he is really good, but I need to see more older eps.

I thought Doctor Who was going to be brilliant with Moffat as head writer, but so far I’ve been disappointed with most of his episodes, I liked more the episodes written by the other writers.

You’ll be happy to learn that the Ponds will be leaving the series soon.
