Doctor's Appt Anxiety

Hi all,

I have a doctor’s appointment in the morning, about which I’m anxious. I’ve been having pain for about six weeks now and I’m hoping it’s only (!) an ovarian cyst or the like. I can’t take the discomfort anymore and so I got squeezed into the schedule for tomorrow. I’m glad of that, but nervous in case it’s something more serious. And since I tend to have anxiety in the mornings, and this is at 9 AM, I know tomorrow morning is going to be unpleasant.

Which is probably one reason I’m still up at 1 AM!

The good thing is that the doctor’s office is down the street from my parish; I will probably park there and walk down the street, and depending on timing and anyplace else they might send me, I might be able to go to midday Mass.

I’d really appeciate your prayers! Thank you…

Hello, Francesca, I can totally sympathize. I revert to an emotional age of about 3 when I have to go to the doctor, esp. when I suspect that “something is wrong”, so I do feel for you.

I have had several scary events like this. Mammograms (my very first one even! :eek:) which resulted in more than one biopsy–I was a nervous wreck! Also just recently a blood test showed that something was amiss with my thyroid, so I had an ultrasound that worried the radiologist, so of course I went into full-on panic mode. I even had to go to an endocrinologist who is a specialist in thyroid disorders to have yet more tests!

You know what? ALL of these things, which I worried about so much I nearly sent myself into panic attacks, turned out to be completely benign and harmless!! 👍

Anxiety is a perfectly normal response to these kinds of things. Just please keep reminding yourself that in the vast majority of cases the things we fear never happen, and that worrying never improved anything!!

I will be praying for you, and never forget that God is watching over you and keeping you safe!

You might find it consoling to re-read Luke 12: 22-29. I especially like these passages (verses 24-26): “Notice the ravens: they do not sow or reap; they have neither storehouse nor barn, yet God feeds them. How much more important are you than birds! Can any of you by worrying add a moment to your life-span? If even the smallest things are beyond your control, why are you anxious about the rest?”

You are doing the right thing to see your doctor–that takes both wisdom and courage, so you should be proud of yourself for forging ahead in spite of your fears!

And I bet you will soon be receiving some very comforting news!!

Well, it’s not gynecological in nature, at least. They did an exam and an ultrasound and all looks well there. So it’s back to square one, but at least that’s ruled out…

I stopped and had a pot of tea after my appointment, and then later went to the noon Mass at my parish, so I’ve calmed down quite a lot. Just considering the next move.

I also had panic-anxiety attacks.,so i know what you go through.

Thank you all so much! Now I just have to muster up the emotional energy to badger the doctors to keep looking for whatever is IS. But at least I know what it isn’t!!

Thank you all. I’ve made a quasi-emergency appointment tomorrow with the doctor since the pain continues. I don’t really seem to have any other symptoms… I wish I had obvious symptoms of a UTI or kidney stones or something, but no. That alone is making me really, really anxious.

Add to that the fact that my employer seems to be in the throes of some convulsions, one of the upshots of which is that management has been writing people (including me) up for taking sick time they’ve accrued and that they are using in compliance with our CBA. I have left voice and email messages all over the place about how I will be in late and how I will bring a note, but I’m not expecting compassion and understanding. That’s adding to my nerves. (I have a grievance hearing on July 15 for the writeup and although I’m expecting to win, that too is ratcheting up the anxiety level… I’ve never had to file a grievance before!)

I wish my sister the nurse were in town. She’s away for the summer, so I’m on my own in terms of anyone knowledgable to talk to or to go to the appointment with me.
