I know this has been a topic before, but I’m still confused about the difference between doctrine and dogma in the Catholic Church.

The way I understand it, dogma is any belief the church holds as divinely revealed by God, and can be officially pronounced through ex cathedra statements (e.g. immaculate conception), ecumenical councils (e.g. Trinity), or the ordinary universal teaching of the magesterium (e.g. sinfulness of taking innocent life). I also understand it doctrine is any truth proposed by the church to be held as true by faith (which includes dogmas).

My question, however, is this: How does one tell what is dogma and what is simply doctrine?

To expound on this, isn’t all truth revealed by God? What constitutes a “direct” revelation vs. an “indirect” one, and how do we tell the difference?
