Documentary on silent monastic life is surprise success

Maybe I’ll skip the crunchy popcorn when I watch this one. 😃
This looks like a good one.
 
Oh my!
Look at how long I watched this film make it’s rounds in Canada and Europe but never here in the states. I purchased the film from Amazon-Germany about a month ago and watched it. The shipping costs were a little more than usual but very timely. It came in less than two weeks.

The film is not a film! It is a prayer.

Be prepared to know French or German. The few words in the movie are spoken in German and subtitled in French.

Don’t eat popcorn when watching this movie…too noisy.

Once again…this documentary isn’t a documentary but rather a prayer. It is beautiful.
 
I would really like to see this. It is really not to be found in the States?

I enjoyed the Monastary on TLC or whatever and have always been interested in the monastic life.

I will have to track this down.

The copy I purchased from Amazon Germany was spoken in German with French subtitles. I’ve given this copy away. Perhaps I will eventually get the copy with English subtitles and then keep it 😃 Truly it is a prayer to behold. I don’t recommend watching it on the big screen at a theatre but rather a good quaility digital at home alone on a couch. Take the phone off the hook and put a do not disturb sign on your door.
My daughter made me chuckle during one scene in the film…when the cows came rambling into a semi-outdoor hallway…she exclaimed “Oh…Carthusian cows!” I had to laugh…I’d never seen cows like these before. I still have not identified what breed they were.
The scene of the monks sliding down the snow covered hills warmed my heart and made me smile.
The whole film is a prayer…even the lightest parts.
 
one more thing…important…

The beginning of the film starts out with 1Kings 19:11-13 written on the screen. This is important…yes… personally I think it would help to sit in silence and read this passage directly from your Bible. Sit in silence for awhile and pray and then turn the film on.
 
I saw previews for this documentary and really wanted to watch it. I hope they release the DVD with subtitles in English.

Thanks for this insight, Contemplative. I was debating driving 4 or 5 hours to get to a theater vs. waiting for the DVD. Some films lose something when viewed on a small screen, but this one gains something… intimacy, perhaps? It’ll probably be cheaper to buy the DVD anyways and, of course, it can be viewed multiple times (and passed to friends, too). 🙂
 
A Canadian member of the International Fellowship of St. Bruno has reported on their mail list that the DVD of “Into Great Silence” will become available in Canada on April 3, 2007.
