does a christian have the power to pronounce a curse?

I have been encountering “word of faith” people who believe that Chrisitians have the power to pronounce curses on others. This strikes me as being contray to loving your neighbor as yourself. Do christians today really have the authority to pronounce curses, hexes on others? If we had such a power, would it not be a sin to do so?

Ultimately there is only one power and that is love.

We do not have the power to withold love. To love is exercising our freedom. To withold love is exercising our enslavement.

To curse someone is to judge them worthy of a curse. Jesus commands us: 'Pass no judgement and you will not be judged. For as you judge others, so you will yourselves be judged, and whatever measure you deal out to others will be dealt back to you Mt 7:1-2

I therefore suggest that what the Lord is plainly saying is that what we do to others, shall be our OWN reward. if we curse others, then we shall indeed become cursed!

St Paul bids us to ‘pursue gentleness and love’

St Peter orders us 'do not repay wrong with wrong, abuse with abuse, on the contraary, retaliate with blessing for a blessing is the inheritance to which you yourslves have been called 1Pr3:8-9

St James bids us to ‘confess your sins to one another and pray for one another the you shall be healed’ Js 5:16.

To pray for someone is to invoke the Power of God upon them. To curse is to invoke the power of evil. To pray for someone is to receive healing yourself and the forgiveness of your sins. To curse them is to bring judgment without mercy upon yourself and to make yourself ill.

There is in my experience great healing to come from praying for someone who has hurt you and given you every reason not to love them. By persevering with prayer, even if initially, it means praying through gritted teeth, you will be healed and the two of you will be reconciled. 🙂

… great.

I hate to be this way but it is things like this makes me very leery of the charismatic movement in Chrisitianity.

Where I come from (Arizona, just south of the Navajo), if you’re putting curses on people, you’re not a witch doctor, you’re a straight-up wolfskin-wearing powdered-corpse-throwing relative-killing incest-commiting witch.

And they don’t like 'em. No sir.
 
Of course…but who would it truly harm…onerself…or the person cursed? I think Shakespear said something of the effect in one of his plays…“I too can call spirits…but will they come?”

Curses are pronounced on others everyday…but do they really have any effect on anyone but the person doing the cursing…to curse someone is damaging to the spirit of the one doing the cursing…not the one cursed.

Huh, what kind of teaching is this, so strange. Are they saying the breaking of curse or really pronounce curses on others?? If they really can pronounce curses on other, i wonder what can they pronounce?? Oh if they can pronounce a curses that say let all non christ believers accept Jesus as their Saviour, wow then that will be great, coz Satan have lost his battle, for all those non believers will be worshipping Jesus like us!!!😛

Well, Charismatic is NOT the same as word-faith.

You’re right. We must pray for them.
 
Basically, pronoucning a curse on someone is directly opposite of forgiveness. 70 x 70.

Those in the word of faith aka name it claim it aka positive confession are really reading mind science theology into the scriptures. Christian Science is an example of mind science group. They believe in what is known as Malicious Animal Magnetism. Kenyon the father of the word faith movement learned his theology at a boston christian science speech school. The book A Different Gospel documents this fact.

The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book): by Don Miguel Ruiz

This book by Ruiz sounds like it was written by a word of faith preacher when it comes to speaking. His theory is that we make out own reality, and with our words we make agreements about our personal reality. Those argeements can be good or unhealthy.

Their logic on curses goes something like this.

You have a lump on your neck, and say to friend, “You know I need to get to a doctor to have this lump checked out.” Your friend says, “it could be cancer.” You admit, that has you worried. In their thinking that lump just became cancer when you admitted that was possible. The fact is, no matter what you responded that lump is or is not cancer.

They take possitive thinking vs negative thinking too far.

It is good thing to have a positive mental outlook in life. Let’s face it, we don’t really like listening to negitive people talk about their problems or gossip about what someone else is doing wrong.

Romans 8:26-39 is positive thinking as a christian. that no one can separte us from Jesus.

Because it sounds so outrageous to many of us that Christians woud advocate uttering curses, we are laughing. But I keep finding little bits and pieces of this health and wellness doctrine sinking into the theology of those Christians around me. This might be because I am in the south which seems to be a haven for odd religious beliefs.

What Daniel describes is disturbing because what happens when such people have ill children? Do they fail to take them to the dr?
