Does a crucifix have to be on the altar?

My recently renovated church just bought a new cross for the processional and to be put on the altar during Mass. It is a risen Christ. We have Jesus suspended above the altar, but He is not on a cross, although His arms are outstretched, He is very much ‘alive’. I thought there had to be a crucifix on the altar at Mass. If I am right, how do I approach our pastor about it?
