Does a Sunday evening Mass fulfill obligation?

I think you’re right about that. At one of the Saturday afternoon weddings I attended, the priest said that it (the nuptual Mass) would count for Sunday.

That said, I’m not sure if a late Sunday Mass would count for BOTH the Sunday and the Holy Day (Monday) obligations.
On that one, a resounding “no.” Two distinct Holy Days, two distinct obligations. It would count for one or the other but never both at the same time.

Of course, there is always the confusion whenever Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday. In our parish, the last “4th Sunday of Advent Mass”, for lack of a better phrase, was at 1PM and the 6PM Sunday evening Mass was the first Christmas Vigil Mass. My pastor made sure to announce it ahead of time so as to not catch people by surprise.

I can understand Canon Law provisions and such, but, I do believe that once the Christmas Vigil sets in (at least when December 24th falls on a Sunday), then we are already on another day, regardless of whether or not the day of the week is a Sunday.

It also made decorating the Church for Christmas Eve very challenging.
