Does abortion mean excommunication?

I had a friend that went to confession recently, and one of the sins she confessed was using the “morning after” pill once. This led to further questioning from the priest, asking her if she had ever had an abortion, to which she said no. Apparently he said that was good, because if she had, she would be excommunicated from the Catholic church.

Is this true? Is there no forgiveness or way to repent this particular sin?
