My parents were married in 1950 in a civil ceremony. Many years later and after 5 children they married in the Church. Her hesitation to marry in the church came from my dad being in many adulterous relationships and also being abusive. He finally after 20 years or so of this made and kept the promise to remain faithful to her. After 42 years of marriage he left my mom for a co-worker and married the woman. She is Catholic and has been divorced. My dad now feels he needs an anullment from my mom so he can receive communion and join the Knights of Columbus. he says because we were born prior to their marriage in the Church it has no impact on us. i.e. meaning we would be considered bastards/illegitimate. Who is right and where does the church stand on this. The sad part is my father stated that his parish priest gave him the idea?? My mom is saddened and I am totally disheartened and hurt that my dad would think of doing this. He and my mom were married for a total of 42 years and 5 children. Please somebody shed some light on this!!!
