Does any of it really matter !?!

That’s what I was thinking today. I have a headache trying to memorise the 12 tribes of Israel, the 8 beatitudes, the 4 marks of the church, the 3 theological virtues, the 4 last things, and on and on and on :o

I thought to myself, the greatest commandments are to Love God, and Love my fellow brother and sister. Easy. That’s all there is to it. Why all the fuss and the hours and hours of reading and study and debate.

Just Love God with all my heart and mind and being, and love my brother and sister as myself.

And then I though :

Nothing as complicated and essential as this would work

I guess the little details are important but dang, why is there just soooo much to learn :confused: And will it ever stop - no, don’t answer that, I already know the answer 😛

Sorry, I’m tired, and I’m finding it very hard to get motivated today :o

Out of those, I’ve memorized … The three theological virtues, the four marks of the church, and the four last things. I don’t even know the Ten Commandments, I just know when I hear one if it’s one of them or not.
 
This is ironic, given your Catholic quiz 😛

It is said that the more we know God, the more we fall in love with Him. Yet the angels had such superhuman knowledge of God that no saint can equal it, and Lucifer and many angels rebelled against the Lord. So I suppose knowledge of God dose not essentially equal love of God; however, if one’s heart is open to God, than truly a deeper knowledge of God will lead one to a deeper love of God. So the more you know, the more you love.

Rely entirely upon Jesus Christ for the surpassing knowledge of Him, for the man who relies on his finite self will not survive; but he who relies on the Infinite One will not only survive but live, not only know about Him but come to a greater spirit of thanksgiving.

I’m praying, very silently and quietly, that realcatholicgk does not come by here and read that :eek:

I have a spare room and can give you copious amounts of unconditional love and acceptance and great coffee and homemade cakes if you end up traumatised by the encounter. I’m traumatised enough just reading his nice posts 🙂

I’m officially just a little child Catholic until April. I’m a neophyte.:curtsey: And yes, as an Evangelical and Pentecostal and even before that I was exposed to Scripture. But it’s hard to memorize.🤷

Ag-not, Do you need to memorize all that for RCIA?

I can’t imagine why we would need to know the 12 tribes of Israel. Oh, I guess it would be nice to greet them by name if we meet any of them in heaven, but other than that:shrug:

BTW, that guy scares me too:eek:

Ask the Spirit for help…he makes things come alive…

now back to trolling in ‘Apologetics’…
 
I know most of those things, partially because I just do from years of reading, partically because I teach the Confirmation class in my parish.

The simple info is what matters the most, the rest fleshes out the fullness of the Truth.

But, you have taken the most important three steps. You listened to God, you trusted God, and you began the journey with God.

God bless you on your first Christmas. I am so happy for you.
 
May the Lord bless you abundantly for even worrying about such things, Ag_not! Honestly, we were not told to memorize the 12 tribes of Israel by name in my RCIA (only two years and some change ago). If this is something you want to memorize, then I say go for it, but as to whether or not it really matters…I don’t know, except to say that it matters if it matters to you, for your own personal growth as a Catholic. If you are feeling stressed out, just imagine yourself in a dialogue with St. Peter at the gates of heaven…knowing what you know about what Jesus said regarding the TWO commandments (that’s right, just two!) upon which hang all the law, what do you imagine St. Peter will really ask of you when you are before him? Will he ask for the names of the 12 tribes of Israel, and tell you maybe to come back after a year in pugatory if you miss one? Better yet, would JESUS ask you that? You know what He’s already asked of you…of all of us…and that’s the most important knowledge you can have!

You are doing great, I think. One look at your Catholic Teachings Quiz (yes, I peeked!), and I knew I couldn’t compete. Not because I don’t care to learn those things, but because I can’t even remember what I had for dinner last night (taquitos tonight, but last night…hmmm…), and that’s just ONE thing, not a big list! I’ll agree with you that it’s daunting, but what better pursuit could a person have? I’ve heard it said that learning about History is tedious because it’s all names and dates and no relevance…I would say that learning about God is probably even harder because it’s one name of all dates and all relevance! 😉

:rotfl: Nooooooooooo Auriel - I have really learned them 😃 I’m not getting others to do my homework for me.

See, the questions I posed, Ive learned the answers to. Then I thinks to myself, this might be nice stuff to share. AND - I can check the answers people give against what Ive learned, to reinforce the learning, see? 😃

Im still in awe how much you knew about the angels. It took me hours to get them down pat !!!

Everyone else that responed, thank you all for your kind words and encouragement.
