Does any of us really try to be like Jesus?

I. But I really doubt He would refuse to see a movie or anything like that. It would depend on the movie.
Jesus had better things to do than watch any movie, even one considered “good”…
I think He would refuse to see one that was very vulgar if it could teach nothing and help no one for Him to do so, but a harmless one-reeler with a friend, why not?
are you Protestant?? I can’t see a true Catholic saying this kind of thing (just being honest)…
This is actually one of the points i was tyring to make… that Jesus had better things to do than watch tv or movies, etc… And so should we…

The bible says to confess our sins to one another

Here is how i am not as much like Jesus as i could be…

I don’t work hard enough at evangelizing others… I do it… but not as much as i should

I let my “issues” get in the way of that…

I rationalize…

i swear sometimes…

Hmmm… i think i should tell all this to a priest… don’t know if i want everyone knowing how sinful i am… :hmmm:

Distracted,

I think it’s important to be like Jesus in the duties of our state in life. In whatever we do, we should model Christ for those we work with, our friends and our families. Like that quote from Teddy Roosevelt: “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”

St. Therese of Lisieux talks about all the little things you can do from moment to moment with great love. Trishie posted this quote by St. Therese in another thread:

I imagine there are quite a few saintly people in the world, quietly doing God’s will in the little things they do throughout the day.
thank you for that reminder…

One of the greatest thi8ngs i discovered about my faith… that i never knew… was this teaching about offering up our sufferings for the conversions of sinners and the expiation of our past sins… (and the souls in Purg)… The weird thing is, when i do this, my sufferings are lessened… (an unexpected bennie). 🙂

***Jesus didn’t participate in worldly activities… If he lived today, He would not watch TV or go to the movies… ***

I don’t think you are relating to biblical principles here, since Jesus tells us to “be IN the world, NOT of the world” This would surely mean that Jesus probable would have gone to movies (for reasons) participated in worldly activities to a point to be with the people but not as the people. For instance, I’m not a party goer (now) but Jesus was, He took part in debates, even political rallies.

Why do we admire people who fornicate (famous couple who keeps having children but doesn’t get married… )

The point here that I might say I admire the actions of some of these people but not think much of the person, their not following Jesus but doing things under their own strength of pride.

***but no attention is given to people who realy live like Jesus - meaning they give up the world and spend a lot of time in prayer and good works… There ARE people like that in the world… but you don’t hear about them in the “regular” news…

You are right here if you are saying that the world does not think much of those who follow Jesus and you would be right in most ways. But remember the world will follow any person if they can get something out of them or, they can use that person as a ladder to their own position or position.

Anyway… the question is: Do you think there is something you could be doing someaht differently than you are used to doing… in order to be more truly like Jesus??
My life has become fulfilled in so many ways I have left the world in many ways and taken up the cross in personal and under covert ( to the world) ways of following Jesus the same way that most if not all of Jesus followers do.
Following Jesus is a process of spiritual change that consequently causes the flesh to cry out that it needs to change.
This is what Jesus calls banking in the bank that lasts forever.

I have had such an attachment to material things in my lifetime:blush: , thinking they would bring happiness, boy was I wrong.:o …however in the last couple years I have prayed to Jesus & Mary to help me over come this attachment.
I do beleive my prayers have helped:gopray2:
I volunteer serving free lunch to the homeless…even know some of them by name now and so enjoy the volunteers I work with.
Since I came back to the chruch 4 years ago…my life has really changed. I have given up collections I owed, sold many things I use to think were important and now I don’t even miss them (de-cluttering ones life) is truely a great feeling!:yup:
I love to read…so I have many books laying around, at least I recycle them and find new ones.
Also find myself reaching out to others in need, what a great feeling, a smile and kind word does wonders for the soul:console:

i agree with this and other things you say but not some of what was highlighted…

After watching a min. here and a minute there of what is on TV i don’t just think but KNOW that Jesus would not watch TV… Even the good shows… aren’t all that “edifying” spiritually…

We are put on this earth for one reason: To work out our salvation with fear and trembling… (Phil 2:12) & help others do the same… TV is a waste of time… (virtually a waste of time… I realize there is a small amount of good coming from it… very small).

I see what you mean however if this is what you think and many probably do, then would you not say that in the days that Jesus lived that should there have been TV that He would not have gone to the people at their own height? As He did that is in the parties He went to, remembering that it was the spirit in Him that led the people to leave their interests in those days.
Would it not be possible that Jesus might have had the power to draw the people away from their homes (as He did in the days of old) and say to one “I will be setting at your home for tea tonight, and what you wanted to watch on TV we will watch and then share points of interest you have about it”
Remember we are relating to the “spirit here” NOT the flesh that it was in Jesus going to the people in the flesh, sharing His spirit with them, that changed so many of them.
If this is not true then why would Jesus right from the beginning change water to the very best of wine?
Why was Jesus seen so often in with the drunks and the tax collectors, prostitutes and others?

I see that you are looking for someone out there who does lots of deeds. I am sure there are many out there, but while waiting to get information on those people, why not stopping by your parish and see a little bit of goodness in those who serve your parish.
This is so true. The truly saintly are also the meek and humble who tend to go unnoticed and don’t seek out attention to get their reward on earth.

On the other hand, there are certainly saintly people of noteriety as well, such as our current Holy Father as well as some notable founders of recent religious orders currently living as well who are living saintly lives.

Jesus didn’t participate in worldly activities… If he lived today, He would not watch TV or go to the movies… He would not live in a mansion…

When I travelled back to my childhood home this summer, I got caught up in family drama, and forgot about my discipleship. Upon return, I became sick, and dwelled upon that for too long.

*****“I will be setting at your home for tea tonight, and what you wanted to watch on TV we will watch and then share points of interest you have about it” ***** don’t mean to be rude but this just doesn’t sound like Jesus… I may have thought something along these lines before i got back inot the Catholic Church but not now… I have been in His Real Presence… and learned that Jesus is a lot different, in some ways, then peole outside the Chruch think he is… (Long story…). Have you ever been (long) in His real Presence??
Why was Jesus seen so often in with the drunks and the tax collectors, prostitutes and others?
because he wanted to convert them… For one thing, they knew they were sinners… It is hard to sin in a great way & not know that you are a sinner… The Pharisees & scribes thoght they were not sinners… just because they were in the church, etc… Obviosuly, they had blind spots in their vision, to say the least… & that’s how it is today… People in church… who don’t commit the big wrongs like adultery & abortion… look down their noses at those who have those sins - sometimes evne if those sins are in the past… (I am not saying ALL Catholics or other Christians in church are like that)…

Anyway, i don’t want to be a big sinner… so (to speak of) i don’t watch TV

I used to, and how beautiful it felt. But for the past few years my faith has been low and depressing.
