Does anyone else ever get really afraid of witnessing the Catholic faith to others? I’m a convert from a more evangelical background, so maybe that’s why the motive to “witness” in a really direct way (tell people the truth verbally) feels so strong to me.
Now that I’m Catholic, I’ve learned and believe that Jesus founded the Catholic Church to teach and guard the whole truth as far as we know it, not just some few “core essentials” (which is why I’m interested in specifically sharing the Catholic faith). But so many of my friends and family, so many people I cherish deeply, aren’t Catholic. If I talk about the Catholic Faith being THE fullness of the truth, I sometimes worry about pushing people away I really care about.
Again, maybe I’m not supposed to approach it so bluntly; but again, the evangelical background is showing its influence.
There are some people that I am comfortable talking to about my faith, who realize these things are simply what we as Catholics believe and that I’m thus prone to share it. It’s not everyone who scares me, just enough people to cause me anxiety. Also, I’m not a legendary Apologist by a long shot, so I’m afraid if I share the Faith with someone and then they stump me, I’ll do more harm than good for the Faith because they’ll take my ignorance to mean there are no good answers for their challenges or something. Anyone else have that fear?
Any advice? Or should I just worry about “preaching the gospel” with my actions? But then…would that necessarily bring someone to realize the Catholic faith, since morally (as far as actual outward actions go) some conservative non-Catholics differ from Catholics only on Birth control (they even believe in free will and perseverence). So I’m not sure how just living my life as a good Catholic will shine that light.
I’m looking for feedback from fellow Catholics, especially if you know how I feel and where I’m coming from.
Peace!
