Does anybody know what Scientology Is?

All I know is that I used to read L. Ron Hubbard books…science fiction ones. I used to think he was a pretty good science fiction author. Of course, I was a teenager then…my brother got me hooked on Michael Moorcock, I can’t believe I ever liked those books! Well, when you are teenager sometimes you do and read stupid things.

But, L. Ron Hubbard wrote “Dianetics,” right? And out of that came Scientology? Is this the same thing as the Church of Christ Scientist? I think that is probably a misleading name. Seems to me also “Dianetics” from the little glimpse of it I got at a friend’s house it seemed it had stuff about aliens in it, too?

Is this actually classified as a “religion?”
 
Thanks. Ewwwww. Sorry, any Scientologists. Just looks weird and bad to me.

But can its adherents really claim to be members of a religion? For instance, can they claim donations as a write off for tax purposes? I’ll have to look at those links some more and see what else I can find.
 
At least for tax purposes I hope their adherents can write the money they give off…from the things I have heard (and I can’t state that they’re true) people, especially celebrities sure give a lot of money to that “church.”

I tried to look at the Dianetics book and it just looked so wrong…

If it looks wrong, then it probably is…In this case, it definately is.
 
Yeah, just wrong. I hate to say that about a total group of people with such a blanket statement like that…but in this case it looks justified.

 
I don’t know if this is true or not, but I’ve heard Hubbard created scientology when someone bet him he couldn’t start a new religion and get people to follow it.

Any religion that involves aliens is not for me.
 
Brainwashing is involved. Never go with them into their temple, or whatever it is they call it. I don’t know if they just choose weak-minded people, or if they mess with them, but people are never quite the same. Cruise is a case in point. He was a nice guy, once.

Actually, the bet was that religion was the ultimate money-making scheme.

The Church of Christ Scientist is different – it’s an older American sect founded by Mary Baker Eddy. Among other things, they don’t believe in medicine. When you hear of children dying of easily treated medical conditions all while groups of people are praying over them, it often turns out the parents were Christian Scientists (in the proper noun sense, not as in ‘scientists who are Christian’! 😛 ). On the other hand, they publish the Christian Science Monitor.

Scientologists will go to the doctor, but abhor psychiatry and psychology – they believe Dianetics has all the answers and that they just need to get rid of the alien ghosts inhabiting them in order to be mentally well and even get superpowers (no, seriously, I’m not making this up).

Operation Clambake is quite informative, although Arnie Lerma can come off a little sensationalist.

Wow, if all that is true, scientology is far more frightening than I imagined.
 
South Park did a wonderful hack job on Scientiology and Tom Cruise.
