Does anyone else hate the Christmas season?

It can be a hard season to get through if you’re single or much of your family has passed on.

cmscms: Go celebrate Christmas with your PARISH family! 😃
Actually, it is very hard for parishes to get enough help in doing the set-up of the church between the 4th Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve, and most can use all the help they can get in ushering and welcoming the throngs that come for Christmas Masses. Before that, they need drivers and organizers for distributing holiday food boxes and to help with other projects that give alms and comfort to the poor, the shut-in, and the lonely. Some parishes and even restaurants offer Christmas dinners for the less fortunate. Any who have hands and smiles to offer for these charitable works are most treasured. It is also a very welcoming way to celebrate the birth of the Savior who was not recognized by those busy with other things!

I wouldn’t say I “hate” Christmas, but I would simply prefer not to participate. No parties, no gift exchanging, no Christmas cards or trees or decorating or anything. I will attend mass and respect Christmas for holy occasion that it is, but other than that you could just leave me out of it altogether.

My husband and I separated in May and this is my first Christmas living alone in many years. It was very quiet. I set up a nice nativity set and decorated with some lighted garland. I spent most of Christmas Eve day helping to clean and decorate my church. These were things I could not do when living with my husband because he was so anti-religious. Although I did feel lonely some of the time overall it was the nicest Christmas I have had in a long time.

My father’s side of the family lives in another state and I see them every 5 or 6 years. My mother is 87 and she stayed with me for four days which was two days too long. She was very abusive to me as a child but I have, with the grace of God, been able to forgive her, but that doesn’t mean I enjoy spending extended periods of time with her.

My southern baptist cousins are coming over on Friday and I am dreading it. They are extremely anti-Catholic because they have been fed so much misinformation about the Church. Unfortunately they are not open-minded enough to engage in conversation about religion. We take turns hosting the family Christmas party and it’s my turn. My house is deocrated with religious pictures and a few statues of saints. We shall see what happens.

If your family is dysfunctional to the point they are hurtful to be around there is nothing wrong with protecting yourself by not spending time with them.
