After my grandpa died my grandma gave my dad my grandpa’s medal and he gave me his. I just wanted to know if any fellow posters wore a “four-way-cross”

I bought my mother one like that at the Vatican when I was in Rome last year. The salesperson referred to it as a scapular cross which was a term I had not heard before.

My father has one. I used to have one when I was younger, but I misplaced it – it was actually called an “athletic medal” because athletes would wear it instead of a whole passel of medals. Mine actually had an image of the Brown Scapular on the back, so I assume that it carried the graces of the Brown scapular provided:
  1. one was properly invested in the brown scapular, and
  2. one had serious enough reason for wearing a medal instead of the cloth scapular.
The four-way seems to be a popular soldier’s medal, too, because it combines so many medals in one.

I went to a religious supply store to get a good 4-way, but I actually found a St. Gabriel (patron of signallers) medal, so I bought that, got it blessed, and wore it behind my dog tags. It’s still there, actually, in my keepsake box.

Yes, I have a silver one on most of the time (including right now 😉 ), and a very pretty gold one that my daughters just gave me for Christmas to wear when dressed up. The silver chain is heavier, so it also gets worn at night, when swimming, etc.

I began wearing it in the early 1980s, after my scapular investiture, because the medal combines the scapular medal, which features the Sacred Heart of Jesus; and the Miraculous medal featuring Mary. St. Joseph and St. Christopher are also depicted. After wearing it for a decade or so, I got out of the habit of having it on, but have been wearing it again over the last year. I feel like I have an old friend back – and was surprised and delighted when my girls noticed I was wearing it and had remembered it when they were growing up. The middle one reminded me that I always had a cross shaped “white spot” on my chest where the medal kept the sun from tanning my skin.

To be a scapular medal, Pope Pius X decreed:
The right side of this medal must show the image of Our Most Holy Redeemer, Jesus Christ, showing His Sacred Heart, and the obverse that of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary.

I’m not sure if this medal qualifies - I guess it would depend upon what’s on the other side.
