I’m not a Catholic, I’m Jewish (just wanted to state that before I say what I do)…
I took a 4 month class in Natural Family Planning at a local Catholic church in 1991. The reason I did this was because I am a “back to nature” type of person, I don’t believe in using artificial drugs for any reason if I can help it.
I found NFP to be very scientific, and very accurate. It is NOT “the rhythm method”, and it works well even if you have irregular periods (I had VERY irregular ones!)
I used NFP to GET pregnant, and it worked 7 times! (unfortunately, 4 of those babies we lost.) I never tried to avoid pregnancy because my husband and I, as religious Jews, wanted to be open to any children God wanted to send us.
I later found NFP to be very helpful in diagnosing a medical problem…keeping track of your basal temps in the morning can help a woman understand her body better, and feel more in control of her body, in a way artificial birth control does not.
I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone, Catholic or not.
