My dad introduced me to the series that follows a Roman Catholic priest Father Brown as his love of mysteries leads him to solve murders and other crimes in 1950’s England.

The series is very clean by today’s standards and is very well done. I love that it doesn’t shy away from the faith at all and tackles some big spiritual topics and issues of morality and theology. So does anyone else here watch the show?

I’ve seen it on PBS a time or two. Good show- Sunday nights at 10pm, as a student, don’t work too well for me though

I’ve watched the first season on Netflix and I’ve seen some on PBS. Pretty good comparatively. Especially for the BBC. They don’t take too many swipes against the Church and are quite respectful.

I watch the show, and I enjoy it very much! I have also read the books!

Do you mean the newer Fr. Brown series? I agree with the reviews that say that Chesterton would barely recognize his creation in the newer series. I believe there Is an older series that is more faithful to the character.

I only know of the current series and I haven’t read the books so I don’t know how closely it follows them.

My wife and I love it. We love it because it is set in a bucolic place during a pleasant time. We like the relative purity of the show. We like that it treats the Church well and generally represents the priesthood accurately.

That said there are definitely some things that aren’t quite right. And the character of Father Brown isn’t quite like Chesterton’s. In the show the priest does put saving souls above everything else, and that is right. In the show the priest does interact with criminals and reformed criminals, and that is right.

But the TV show is a more of a straightforward murder mystery solved by Father Brown. The books were more about the insights Father Brown had into people’s souls, through his insights gained as a priest, and his quest to save souls. I do think the series taken as a whole does have some of the same spirit as the books, but it isn’t the same. I think overall it is a good adaptation and certainly for my wife and I enjoyable.

I do 🙂 I found it on tv and now order them through the Library.I don’t mind it takes a while, something to look forward to and also that way more people are able to see them if they get put on the shelf at the library for a bit 👍

I watched the whole series on Netflix,. I think they call it binge watching! I had my favorite characters and actors or actresses who portrayed them. They were enjoyable to watch. Surprising anyone left alive in the village!

I’ve gone through several seasons on Netflix…I think I originally heard about it from a post on this forum.

I do like it, even if every episode has the same basic “formula.” Would be interesting in checking out the books!

I believe a new season will be out soon. I read it was being filmed. So for fans who have watched the show we have more on the way. I don’t know how long it takes to get to Netflix which is how I watch them.

I think the new series is on now, was watching it this afternoon on BBC, don’t usually, but it was an interesting story.

My husband and I enjoy this show, though neither of us is a murder-mystery lover. We do have some fun mocking the characters, “Dude, this is Kembleford, you can’t talk like that and expect to live!” The title character is only very loosely based on Chesterton’s character, but it’s clearly not meant to be the same character, so why be bothered?

The show treats the faith (including the sacraments) accurately and in a positive light. My Protestant husband is even learning the lingo of confession, and seeing how the seal plays out in, well, not-quite-real-life circumstances. The Father Brown character is written with a deeply pastoral heart, which is comforting to me since I lack that presence in my daily life. I love how tenaciously he keeps chasing after the souls of murderers and thieves, including people who are in middle of trying to kill him.

If you haven’t noticed it yet, pay attention to the “screamers” who find the bodies. There’s one hilarious moment between Lady Felisha and a film actress that Husband and I are still laughing about four days later. 🙂

Hello.

Watched one episode and thought it was well done.

I prefer shows with a higher body-count. Lately have been watching Longmire.

Oh I like Father Brown! He´s on german television, too. It´s nice and not that exiting to watch after work with a glass of wine and relaxing 😃

I thought it was interesting the 3 different police chiefs they had and their distinct
characters and what they brought to the show. They were all so perturbed with the
Father or the Padre.

Yes, but I liked the first two better. The latest one is too surly for my taste.
