Does anyone get really annoyed when people talk during a Mass/Liturgy?

So, I went to the Good Friday liturgy this afternoon, and when we were kneeling as the ministers entered in silence, people in the back were talking loudly. Someone behind me was talking loud too and I turned around and gave them a blank look and they got the picture. It just irritates me. It’s Good Friday people! Have a little respect!

My present church isn’t too bad with the yakkers. My old church was a joke. It was the last place I ever went to pray. I get just as fed up with the parents who ignore misbehaving children and refuse to remove the screaming babies.

The words “We will live in silence” were hardly out of the priest’s mouth when 10 people started talking.

:banghead:

I make it a point to attend a Extraordinary Form Mass. There are no talkers there. They seem to have a grasp and attention of the real value and meaning of Holy Mass, and that is not even in English!

We do have a number of small children who do seem to be vocal, but it is alright, as they know no better. We often whine a great deal more then they do, when one thinks about it…

But when I have to attend the Ordinary Form, it seems that the talkers usually are the ones that have to sit right in front of me. With closer auditory detection, I find they are also in back of me as well. I have had the experience to actually witiness them texting on phones (or whatever they use now), but they might be using their ipod to look at the readings of the day (a missal is right there).

When extranious noise starts up, I have to concentrate a little more to hear ( I am a little hard of hearing). The chatter is unnessary by all means, but one has to just remember they may not realize what is happening or where they are at. It is just an unfortunate effect of modernism that has taken effect in some parishes. Believe it or not, I see it more in older people than younger ones, which is often a little disturbing. The smaller children there talk too, but again, they don’t know any better.

I’ve also sat amongst older people (senior citizens) that SHOULD know better, but talk as though they’re in a social hall in church.

It’s like they don’t know or don’t care that they’re not sitting in their living rooms. It’s a house of God!

You have to think ‘Are these the kind of people who would have gossiped in the presence of Jesus in agony on the Cross?’

Quite possibly.

I’m still waiting for someone to answer their cell phone and have a conversation during mass, maybe that’s happened elsewhere. No wonder the world (U.S.) is in such a noisy mess they don’t hear God.

You are not alone. Last night after processing the eucharist around the nave and then putting it on display , exposition is probably a better word, Our pastor requested everyone remain silent as they left the nave. I was suprised as what usually happens at the end of mass is that once the priest leaves the nave the people turn the nave into a town meeting. I guess as long as we have Jesus confined to his little box we are able to comment on the weather, last night’s dinner, Mary’s dress and what we will have for lunch if we are on time.
Every sence we removed the tabranacle from the altar we have lost a sense of sacredness and respect for other people wanting to pray or just reflect on the mystery that has occured or the gift we have recieved. We win in the end, I read the end of the book!
God Bless, Norval

Yes it annoys me. My husband is worse than my teens about whispering some trivial thing to me during Mass.

But in general, our church is silent before Mass - always. Leaving is another story, as there really is no gathering place, but today it was quieter. Maybe not silent, but quieter…

A couple of years ago, I attended a Mass for the Feast of the Assumption at the Assumption Grotto. It was BEAUTIFUL. We were actually in what was/is a grave, and we did the Mass the old way (not in Latin, but there were portions in Latin). 🙂

During the Communion, two men, older, stood together and TALKED all through the Communion service. Dirty looks did nothing for them.

I probably would have been bothered anyway, but the fact that this was one of those Masses that isn’t frequented by the guys who would rather be at the game. It’s off the beaten path.

I’ve noticed lately that at most Masses, a lot of folx seem to think that when there is ‘nothing’ going on, that’s the time to talk. So, Communion is chat-time. No regards for the fact they are kneeling, or that their ‘whispers’ may disturb someone else from praying. 🤷

I start with praying for them, and then I pray for myself that I don’t want to be homocidal!

The form of the Mass has nothing to do with it.
