I want to know if anyone out there had any bad stories from when they where protestant.

When I was 7-13 I had the fear that I was going to get left behind during the Apocalypse. I always had to be around my family and when we would get a bad T storm I would be scared that the trumpet was being blown and that this was it. We were always tormented with story’s of the End and also had to watch bad acting movies. It was amazing one film the Antichrist is a man another he is a program. (it was like tron on a bad acid trip) But I remember being petrified with fear of being left. Boy was I surprised when I read the Catholic views on the book of Revelation.

Hope to hear some stories

God Bless

When I was a little boy, I was scared by stories about Jesus coming “as a thief in the night.”

My mother soothed my fears by saying that thieves take things that don’t belong to them. But since my heart belonged to Jesus I didn’t have to worry.

I was 10 or 11 and had been raised a Jehovah’s Witness. I was at home alone and cut myself with a kitchen knife. I knew that it was bad enough to be looked at but my mom was over at her friend’s house, dad was at work and my older brother was – who knows, not around.

I wrapped up my bleeding finger and ran to each of the adjacent houses, no one home. I ran across the street, no one home. I was getting scared and the bleeding wouldn’t stop – of course I just sprinted 75 yards so that might have had something to do with it. So anyway.

There was “That House” … You know the one. You don’t really know who lives there. It was painted bright pink about 15 years ago. There are about 75 million steps to go up from the side walk to the side door. The yard has never been mowed since the place was built in 1952. There might be wild lions sitting in an old Studebaker in all that brush for all I know. Well the finger was throbbing and I needed help.

So I started making my way up the steps. It seemed to take forever and the closer I got to the now faded pink rancher the more uneasy I felt. I had arrived to the side door. A huge metal security door; in this neighborhood? What were they keeping in there? The light fixture was hanging by one screw and I could see the aged wiring. I just stood there with my heart racing in my ears. I gripped my finger all the tighter through the blood soaked kitchen towel. I was so scared that I decided to leave.

Just as I turned to go the door opened quickly. The scent of beef bullion cubes rushed out like it came from a space ship air lock. I turned back around and saw a most pleasant and pretty young woman. Then a voice came from with the shaded darkness of the house, “Who’s there?” It was an old woman’s voice but not grandmotherly. The young woman said, “It’s one of the neighbor boys, he’s hurt.” “Brining him on in."

The security door creaked loudly as she swung it outward and I sheepishly walked in. The scent of beef bullion was cubes stronger now and the dilapidation of the outside was not hiding any treasures on the inside. As my eyes adjusted to the dim light in the room I saw the elderly woman laying on her couch. She covered the couch and then some. Her voice softer now, “Come on over let me see.” Then to the young woman, “Get some water and a Band-Aid.” I walked over and knelt by the couch and she tended to my finger. She was gentle and my fears were easing, though the stench of the place was still a bit overwhelming. Then it happened.

Just as the young pretty woman returned to the living room and I turned my head to see her, the elderly woman grabbed me and pulled me into her warm, soft, gushy, over ample breasts, and belly fat. I just about pooped myself and yelped. I pulled away and was trying to bolt to the door and she pulled me back in and held me even tighter. Then she rolled her eyes back in her head and looked up to the ceiling and said in a very loud voice, “JESUS HEAL THIS BOYYYYYYY!!!” I was so freaken scared my eyes were about to bug out of my head then I just froze. The old woman continued in her loud healing type prayers for several minutes. After just a few seconds I realized I wasn’t going to be eaten or killed so I relaxed a little. After she finished she asked me if I believed in Jesus. I told her I was a JW and then I got the cold shoulder from her. The pretty one was still nice. She found out where my mom was and called her to come get me.

I got 9 stitches, a cool girl impressing scar, and a great story out of the deal.

I went on a Habitat for Humanity a week long trip about 12-14 years ago. Some of us went to Mass while we were there. At one point during our stay, my friend Paul, while he was fueling at a gas station had a sheriff look at him funny. After Paul paid for his gas, he went on his merry way. A little ways down the road, the same cop pulled him over and wrote him a ticket. The officer let him know why. He said it was because he saw him come from a Catholic church, and that they don’t want people like him around. There was no other reason and the officer made that clear. There was more than one witness.

Wow, that is really unkind!

I’ve posted this on CAF somewhere before, but… when my autistic son was 7 years old or so, his Sunday School teacher told him he was going to Hell because he wouldn’t pray the “sinner’s prayer.” He was kicked out of Vacation Bible School for being “too enthusiastic.” Then when he was 14 the pastor would not baptize him because he couldn’t get up in front of the church and give his “testimony.” Once I was getting his hair cut when he was 4 or 5 and the Pentacostal barber told me he was possessed by a demon and I needed to bring him to his church to be “healed.”

But the real abuse started when it became known we were converting to Catholicism. A woman in the grocery store told my son his mother was taking him to the “devil’s church.” We have virtually no Protestant friends left because we are “heretics.”

The first time my son went to CIC class I was scared to death, because he is loud and doesn’t understand abstract concepts. He loved it from the beginning . His first question was, “am I going to Heaven when I die?” After a few weeks, the teacher came up to me and said, “I just wanted you to know how much your son has enriched my faith!” I broke down and cried. Later our priest told me that my son is a precious gift of God – I couldn’t believe it. No “Christian” person had ever told me that before. Thanks be to God! Debbie

Oh my, what a horrifying thing to do to an autistic child. I absolutely love children and I have a soft spot for those with special needs, I happen to be a child care worker for children with disabilities (mental or physical). They are indeed a blessing, I’m glad that your son has found people who can appreciate him. God bless.

When I was 11, my half sister re-entered my life (after being absent for about 6 years). One night she decided she was going to sleep in my bed with me. As we crawled into bed, as asked me if I was going to say my prayers. I was silent for a moment, and then replied that I had just finished, as I always said them silently. She then replied, “You have to say them out loud. If you don’t, Satan is going to come for you in the middle of the night, because Jesus won’t know you said your prayers.” I am glad I was old enough to know better, but this still wasn’t appropriate for a 25 year old woman to say to an 11 year old girl, in my opinion.

After she finished she asked me if I believed in Jesus. I told her I was a JW and then I got the cold shoulder from her.
Well that was really mean of her! I know there are a lot of people who cold-shoulder anyone of a different faith, but you’d think she would have taken into consideration the fact that you were just 10 or 11 years old. (Although I suppose that’s still not as bad as the cop that tickets people just for being Catholic.)

This sort of thing used to be a lot more common, not only with autism but with many pyschological and mental issues. Before there was much understanding of them, people tended to assume evil spirits were involved.

Just to present a little balance and of course I could talk at length about how they have welcomed my son
Not to interupt too much but sometimes people have limited experiences with certain sects and since the word in the OP also means US…I wanted to present a little balance
God bless

I am still Protestant, and have some bad stories. Most of them involve other Protestants. A few involve Catholics. As a result, I rarely go to Baptist or Catholic weddings or funerals.

Oh goodie!
We can sit around and tell stories about how we dislike other faith traditions! Let’s hurt people’s feelings! Yes, what fun. 😦

What do you have against Baptist weddings and funerals? You have to tell this story.

I enjoyed reading this. You are a very descriptive writer. It was like I was there!

I have two stories. One comes from when I was a protestant (as a little girl) and one from when I was a new Catholic (as a teenager).

When I was little I my best friend at the time was a PK (preacher’s kid). She was really into Jesus and incorporated him into EVERYTHING (which I actually kind of admire in hindsight). Anyway she even incorporated Jesus into playing Barbies, no joke. We used to act out the bible w/ our barbies. We would borrow her brother’s GI Joe dolls to depict males. I’ll just never forget how hard her parents laughed when they checked in on us and overheard my friend moving around her JI Joe and holding a dondald duck plushee in the air saying in what she thought was a manly voice, “This is my beloved son w/ whom I am well pleased.” I was using a princess Jasmine barbie wearing the sleeping beauty barbie to be Mary. I remember that I was always playing as Mary even in scenes where she didn’t belong- like Moses parting the red sea. Ha ha ha.

My other story… My parents took me to see The Passion of the Christ (my first R rated movie, lol) when I was about 16 or 17. I can’t remember exactly how old I was. Anyway during the scene where Jesus is crucified two things began to happen, a large woman in a floral print dress and a big hat w/ lots of flowers on it stands up and starts waving her arms in the air (spirit fingers inclueded) whispering rather loudly (like a stage whisper), “oooooooooooh Jesus, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, yes God! Praise you. Mmmmmmmmm.” I remember being really weirded out because it sounded like she was in pleasure… Maybe it was just my dirty hormonal teenage mind though… Then at the same time an old men stood up and starting convulsing and mumbeling a bunch of jibberish- I believe some people would call this speaking in tongues. I personally think the old man was fooling himself, but who am I to assume he wasn’t really speaking some secret language w/ God?

I don’t want to pry, but I’m quite curious as to why you don’t like to attend Catholics weddings and funerals.

… and tell stories about how we dislike other faith traditions!
At the risk of sounding like a ‘broken record’, I don’t think this ^^ happens any more on CAF than it does on the average Protestant forum.

What do you have against Baptist weddings and funerals? You have to tell this story.
I would guess that 1/2 to 3/4 of the Southern Baptist funerals that I attend are rarely worship services - they are short eulogies that quickly turn into, “If you died today would you be in heaven?” It seems an insult to both the worship of God and to the family of the deceased.

About 1/2 of the Southern Baptist weddings I used to attend were wedding productions instead of worship services. Music can turn horrible.

It is always dangerous to make generalizations, and I am not trying to do that. But I try not to go unless I absolutely have to - it just depresses me. But that just may be me.
