Does anyone here know the history of the Rosary?

I know that (i think) St Dominic (way back when… medievel times) saw a vision of the Virgin Mary and she told him to pray the rosary… (??)

but then i have heard the rosary goes back further than him - that it was used in exorcisms…

it surely did an exorcism on *me *years ago… :eek:. 🙂

(and some of the demons may have decided to hang around a little longer… consigned to the background… :mad: but … se la vie… its not like i am the only one who has demons, figurative ones or literal… )

anyhow just wondering what the history of the rosary is…

and how far back it goes…

Now, about the history of the rosary…

It is a facinating history that dates way back even prior to the year 300 A.D. and is steeped with wonderment.

St. Dominic formalized it, at the request of the Blessed Mother in the 1200’s.

St. Alan de la Roche reinstituted it and started the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary which still exists today … 500 years later! I invite you to join this confraternity. I will post the website on this thread after I send this message to you.

St. Alan, a brilliant theologian and Dominican priest, started his work on the promulgation of the rosary at the request of Jesus who appeared to him during Mass while consecrating the Host. He walked the earth between 1428 and 1475. He is a newly canonized and little known saint who answers prayers REALLY FAST !!

The rosary has been since promulgated by many popes…to and including Pope John Paul.

My next post on this thread will be some links to more information about this spectacular devotion.

the rosary is what made me a Christian (objectively speaking, rather than subjectively speaking)…

i have heard of that Confraternity… and was going to join before but… .can’t recall waht happened…

maybe you should explain a little about it… for the others here who don’t know about it (other than me)…

I’m not sure what their… main objective is…

Fr. Herbert Thurston has authored a great history of the devotion here. He pours water on the more legendary aspects of it.
Impressed by this conspiracy of silence, the Bollandists, on trying to trace to its source the origin of the current tradition, found that all the clues converged upon one point, the preaching of the Dominican Alan de Rupe about the years 1470-75. He it undoubtedly was who first suggested the idea that the devotion of “Our Lady’s Psalter” (a hundred and fifty Hail Marys) was instituted or revived by St. Dominic. Alan was a very earnest and devout man, but, as the highest authorities admit, he was full of delusions, and based his revelations on the imaginary testimony of writers that never existed (see Quétif and Echard, “Scriptores O.P.”, 1, 849). His preaching, however, was attended with much success.

You can usually get the address from right-clicking the picture and then clicking copy link or from clicking properties depending the web browser.

thanks…🙂 sounds complicated, especially to someone who hasn’t eaten in a month… 😃

thanks… I will have to try this some time when i can focus better… Right now I am having a hard time following it… :confused: …not too great w/ computers… except to word-process… (along with th usual problem … Low blood sugar from not eating as much as i should… or so my body seems to be telling me… :stretcher:)

I would remind the author whom you quoted that “Thou shallt not bear false witness against thy neighbor” and “Love thy neighbor as thyself” (and don’t forget to "Love thyself as God loves you and, most of all, “Love God above all else.”)

Additionally, the author that you quoted is making the type of accusations that most saints and blesseds had to typically endure throughout their lifetime and afterward. Mental illness must NOT be confused with gifts from the Holy Spirit. Clearly, St. Alan has more than proven that his gifts are from the Holy Spirit and NOT delusions. Of course, it would take one, to know one and the poor author that you cite most probably was not as blessed as St. Alan and therefore unable to recognize St. Alan for who he really is.

Well, you might as well toss out the entire 1913 encyclopedia. Here’s their entry on Alan de Rupe, from another author.

His vision of the restoration of the devotion of the Rosary is assigned to the year 1460. Alanus published nothing during his lifetime, but immediately after his death the brethren of his province were commanded to collect his writings for publication. These were edited at different times and have occasioned much controversy among scholars. His relations of the visions and sermons of St. Dominic, supposed to have been revealed to Alanus, are not to be regarded as historical. His works are published by Graesse in Trésor des livres rare et précieux.

In 1922, Dom Louis Cougaud stated, “The various elements which enter into the composition of that Catholic devotion commonly called the rosary are the product of a long and gradual development which began before St. Dominic’s time, which continued without his having any share in it, and which only attained its final shape several centuries after his death.” However, other scholars would rebut that St. Dominic not so much “invented” the rosary as he preached its use to convert sinners and those who had strayed from the faith. Moreover, at least a dozen popes have mentioned St. Dominic’s connection with the rosary, sanctioning his role as at least a “pious belief.”

Fr. Thurston’s research into Catholic devotions did not make him popular.
