Following on from a previous thread, I was wondering if anyone knows of any congregations in the UK for older women. I have looked on the internet but I can’t find any (knowing me I’m looking in the wrong place!)

Most, if not all, of the religious communities in the UK will accept older vocations with open arms. Are you already in the UK?

HTH.

Hello!

Just stopping by to let you know that there is one community in the UK which you might want to look into. The Daughters of the Heart of Mary.

Their website it www.dhmary.com

Best wishes!

Have you looked into the Sheffield or Wolverhampton Carmels? I know Sheffield is one of the nicer ones, but also more austere in their living, so it might be a little bit difficult to adjust to the life.

One of my friends also entered the Carmel in Quidenham. I don’t know if they accept older applicants, but it’s worth an inquiry!

Almost all of the religious communities in the UK accept older women (they don’t have the same worry about high health care costs that we do in the US)… especially the Carmels. If you are Benedictine in spirituality, Tyburn and Colwich are worth checking out.

If you are looking into a Carmel, there are two different Constitutions followed, the 1990s and the 1991s. The 1990s are more austere, they try to align themselves with St Teresa’s original consitutions. Of the 1991s, all are slightly different as all Carmels are autonomous (independent) of each other.

Thank you all for your help, I will certanly check out the orders recommended 🙂

This link shows photo albums of some UK Carmels

This doesn’t have photos of all the UK Carmels but it is always nice to see any photos…

Thank you all again for your help. I am going to do some research on the orders that you have mentioned and I am also going to take this time during Lent to ask Our Lord to guide me.

I am going to write to some of the orders for more information and the rest I leave to my Lord 🙂

There was a congregation with ‘Mary, Mother of the Church,’ in the title, founded, I believe in Northern Ireland, but now located in the UK, for women past retirement age-but what is ‘retirement age’? I have read (in First Things) that Kaiser Wilhelm arbitrarily chose 65 when inventing the state pension. Good luck in your discernment.

Thank you odubhghail 😃 I have time as it will take me about 3 years to clear off all my debts and I can use that time to see where the Lord leads me and prepare myself.

I have found some orders who I have contacted, but there is one that I feel a pull towards and that is ‘The Dominican Sisters of St Catherine of Sienna’. I have checked out their website and for want of a better phrase it ‘ticked all the boxes’. Now I am waiting to get some info from them about the order.

Please hold me in your prayers, so that I may do what Our Lord wills NOT what I will.

Aren’t they in Oulton/Stone?

Here is the Oulton Abbey website (possibly again); cloisters.tripod.com/uk_osb_oulton/

There are three Dominican groups for women in the U.K.-Stone, Bushey, and the Secular Institute.
