It is an acronym formed from the initial letters of the (Old) Latin words that Pilate wrote on the title and placed on Jesus’ cross mentioned in John 19:19, “IESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDÆORVM,” which translates into English as Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.

I also read in one Apologetics site that the initials of INRI in hebrew translate as the Tetragrammaton, that’s why the jewish priests were so horrified at the sign.

I know they had to pronounce the u “oo” sound. If they had no u how would they know to say “oo” instead of “v” proper? Veritas wouldn’t work well as “ooritas”.

He makes a reference to

“the O and Y are conjoined into a single character.”

“and interprets IC as the standard abbreviation for IHCOYC common in Byzantine and later Greek.”

When I look at Old Greek Bibles I often find “IC” as an abbreviation for Jesus.

And I also see in alphabet conversion charts a single letter as a substitute for the combined letters O and Y.

Maybe I can send some images later.
