It was NOT a New Years Eve celebration:shrug:
There are no hard-and-fast rules, but I suppose personal familiarity and/or interest might have a bearing.Thank you for the replies but I’m curious to why the Mar Papa did not take part as a celebrant? Do Popes often know how to celebrate the other liturgies?
Well… all I can say is that Maran Mar Papa Yohannan Paulos II looks very nice in these Malabarese vestments!Do Popes often know how to celebrate the other liturgies?

I understand that Bishop Fulton Sheen could celebrate multiple ritual liturgies.I agreethough the Holy Father forgot to tuck in his stole!
It’s important to realize that any bishop may celebrate any rite he has faithful in his care from. Bishops are all polyritual by virtue of their office. The Archbishop of Denver celebrates both the Roman and Byzantine Rites (Nikonian Recension), since he has a parish that is Russian Catholic under his Omophor.I understand that Bishop Fulton Sheen could celebrate multiple ritual liturgies.
Really looking forward to Bishop Sheen being canonized:thumbsup:It’s important to realize that any bishop may celebrate any rite he has faithful in his care from. Bishop Fulton Sheen was exceptional in that he was trained, and trained fairly well, in several. He was specifically granted faculties for rites that he didn’t have canonical care of the faithful of.
He’s even more exceptional in that he was making it clear to the Roman Catholic multitudes that the “Greek Catholics” were fully Catholic. He, as much as any Roman bishop besides the Bishop of Rome, was instrumental in teaching about the unity in diversity.
