Does anyone know if censers (thuribles) on chains are allowed for lay people to use at home in Byzantine Catholic and Slavic Orthodox churches homes?

I don’t know and have never read about it the liturgical rules. All I know is the lay people in those churches all seem to use hand censers only.

I stupidly went out on a limb in the liturgy section saying I know chain censers are not allowed for lay people, but the reality is I only know what I have personally seen 😊 .

Can anyone say for sure?

Sure, why not? We have one in our Icon corner.👍

From what I know from my Orthodox friends, only the priest and the deacon can swing censers, so if the readers or unordained people cannot do it in a liturgical context, it’s logical that they can’t do it at home either. And surely it’s much more practical and cheaper to use a hand censer at home (though I know that some don’t buy any censers, but rather use simple spoons or other metalic objects). On the other hand, anyone can buy a censer on chains at a shop that sells liturgical objects, so there are people who simply keep them at home, hanging before an icon (I have even seen one hanging on a balcony).

An instructive point of view (ROCOR):

Traditionally the censer on chains is reserved to the deacon and priest. Lay people would use a hand censer while praying at home or in the absence of a priest.

Even the deacon while praying without a priest would use a hand censer.
