I have a vague memory of my childhood when Mass was in Latin the celebrant said, I think, special prayers at the end of mass. I think they were prayers to the Holy Spirit and were to preserve the Church from the evils of Satan. Is my memory correct or am I having yet another senior moment?

If anyone else knows those prayers, I would appreciate learning the words.

Yes. I remember and I have heard them recently at our weekly Latin Mass. They include the St. Michael prayer but also more protective prayers. I do not have my Latin missal near me at present but you can find an old Latin missal-ask around-and it will have those prayers.

It’s interesting that they do not pray these prayers in the English-speaking mass; is it because someone thought the devil had gone extinct?

My old Latin Missal (from 1943) does not contain any prayers at the end of mass other than “the last Gospel”.

It is possible that the prayers you recall were recited as custom where you were but were not a part of the mass proper.

These are the Leonine prayers by the sound of it. They were instituted by Pope Leo XIII.

They do not form part of the Mass but are recited after Low Mass in the EF. They were omitted from the 1962 missal and removed from use in 1965.

As they were not removed from use until 1965 there is an argument to their use in Mass celebrated according to the 1962 missal. We say them after every Low Mass in the EF.

Yes, I believe that these are the prayers. I remember now that they included the prayer to St. Michael. At the end of Mass, the priest knelt down at the bottom of the altar steps and recited the prayers. Just as I didn’t understand the Latin words in my childhood, I don’t understand references to different types of missals these days. Mass is Mass and as long as it includes the Offertory, Consecration and Priest’s Communion, I’m not bothered about minor alterations. In my childhood innocence, I thought the practice was discontinued because people used to hurry out of of the church before the prayers started. We could do with having some similar prayers reintroduced to Mass, perhaps at the post-Communion stage.

There is a big difference between the 1962 Missal - the Mass of Blessed John XXIII and the 1970 Missal - the Mass of Paul VI

The 1962 Missal is that used in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (also referred to as the Tridentine Mass or the Traditional Latin Mass) the 1970 Missal is that used in the Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite (often referred to as the Novus Ordo or the New Mass)

Differences between the 1962 Missal and earlier missals is minor - the change from 1962 to 1970 is the big one!

To be honest I don’t see the EF as being challenging as it is. Once one gets the readings in the vernacular you don’t need to be a great intellectual to follow.

My view is people will react to how they are treated. If they are treated as if something is “too much for them” then it will be.
