Does Anyone Wear their Brown Scapular on the outside of their clothes? If so what reactions have you had or have you had any questions about it from others?
 
Not usually. It tends to catch on things. Sometimes the back side comes out of my collar, then sometimes people tell me that it’s come loose and I tuck it back in.
 
I recommend asking any Carmelite sister who wears the full habit, but I don’t think that’s the kind of answer you’re looking for. I wear mine on the inside because it catches on stuff and if I’m not careful, flies away.😃
 
Mine catches on everything and even when I wear it under my clothes, it finds ways to sneak out or come apart and fall down my sleeves.

🤷 I really don’t know the answer to that. I was just wondering if anyone had or did. You know a moment of wondering.
 
i wear mine inside. believe it or not mine helps me tremendously in my spiritual battle.👍

The Brown Scapular is a sacramental devotional of prayer. Those invested in the Scapular have the assurance of all those good Carmelites praying for them. When it comes to prayer you know how it goes – lock the door behind you and do it in secret.

I keep my rosary in my right pocket – so that I can put my hand on it. That enables me to say my rosary in public when nobody is suspecting. My scapular stays around my neck, but when I’m working (physical labour) I keep it in my pocket with her brother rosary.

It’s good to spread devotion to the scapular just as it is the rosary. From time to time pull the rosary out of your pocket in front of random people and just straighten it out or de-knot it or whatever as an excuse. Do the same the same with the scapular. Just be more up front. Say stuff like,“Ever seen one of these?” And put it on…

Preach the Gospel. Always.
 
I hate to be the big pagan here, but I learned long ago that I just couldn’t wear a brown scapular without it emerging from my collar (I don’t care if someone knows I wear such things, I just hate having anything poke out of my collar) or working its way around to where I feel like its going to strangle me. My adult son wears a brown scapular, but I truly don’t know how he keeps it under control.

I do wear the miraculous medal and, if I don’t have a tie on, people can see the chain a good part of the time, and I don’t care that they do.

But no, I don’t wear any religious medal or anything outside my clothing, and while I see no problem with a medal being visible around a woman’s neck, because their clothing often allows for it, I’m not sure why a man would put a medal or scapular outside his clothing, because mens’ clothing really doesn’t accommodate it.

Because a scapular is supposed to be a large apron that you wear for work. If you look at older European art you see women wearing it quite often over their dress, or something much like it. Some sources state that it was originally a work apron for monks. After a while, people decided that they could make a smaller scapular, that wasn’t near as large as what it was originally, for laypeople. So, ignoring the spiritual significance, the scapular had a practical application as an apron, and when it became small, became impractical as an apron. Of course, if you check, I don’t believe it’s used as an apron anymore either. From what little I’ve seen, Carmelite sisters in full habit will wear a modern apron over their habit when working, so they wear an apron over an apron. Anybody have more/better information?
 
I work on construction sites and it has often fallen out but i just let it sit where it is. I have had a few remarks about what it was but i think after the first couple of responses i gave the other men thought better of it and have never asked.
 
In the summer when wearing open neck sirts or tee-shirts, my scapular - or more specifically the strings attaching the two cloth pieces are quite visible and regularly the scapular comes out from under the shirt, particularly when I’m playing sport. And if someone is close to you in a crowded train or bus then the scapular is visible through a summer-weight shirt. As a convert (many years ago), I am still secretly proud of how this marks me out as a Catholic in such a secular world.

So the minor inconvenience of wearing a scapular is just a part of life and a way incidentally in which Catholics can bring non-Catholics to witness a small aspect of Catholic spirituality. Seeing people wearing the scapular, medals or crucifixes etc was actually one of the first things that aroused my curiosity about the Catholic church when I was a young boy - “out of small seeds big trees do grow” But while I don’t intentionally wear it outside of my clothes I’ve noticed some of my fellow parishioners wearing their scapular when at holy mass, which is fine as an evidence of their public witness to the faith. It is a great pity that only a few traditional Catholic churches now enrol all first communion candidates in the brown scapular following their first communion. It would do wonders if this custom should be brought back into greater use.
 
I don’t wear mine on the outside (not hiding it either) but it does come out sometimes. Some don’t say anything, others point and ask, and some take it in their heads, bring their heads in close, and then ask what it is. I tell them, and most will just nod and smile, sometimes we discuss it in detail, sometimes not. The most common response has been “I didn’t know Catholics still wore those.”:rolleyes:🙂
