Rather quick question…

My son is being baptized today at a time outside of Mass.

Does this baptism negate my need to attend Mass prior??

The obligation to attend Mass is an obligation … to attend Mass. Not to step inside a church building; to actually attend Mass.

Often, baptisms will be scheduled immediately following Mass. It’s a good idea to be there for Mass; as a side benefit, you don’t have to worry about being late for your own son’s baptism.

I understand that. I was unaware fully if the baptism ceremony in any way met similar requirements of the mass.

I am not trying to negate my duties but instead understand.
There is a difference my friend…

Not for the Baptism you describe (“after Mass”). Sometimes a Priest will include a Baptism DURING Mass, around the time of the Homily. So, in that case you’d be going to Mass AND attending a Baptism. But as a separate celebration, the Baptism has nothing within it that would satisfy for Mass. (Nor the Mass anything that would satisfy for Baptism.)

Its is it’s own entity as it is @1:30. Clearly outside of any normal scheduled mass.

One our parish had a baptism right before Mass so there was a lot of people there. It’s a nice thing to welcome them in to the parish family. So, no Mass is not interchangeable with Mass.

Well, this will be the last time as I’m too old for anymore kids 😉

I made 10:30 mass and on the way to baptism like a good boy!😀

No! The obligation is to go to Mass. This obligation is either fulfilled or is not. In the case of the latter there may be a valid reason for not going or a dispensation may be granted.

No other liturgy whatsoever fulfils the obligation.
