Does bible talk of purgatory?

Actually Revelation says you can’t add anything to the book of Revelation since the there was no bible when the book of Revelation was written. 🙂

I just wanted to clarify what purgatory isn’t. Purgatory is not a second chance at confessing all your sins after you die. If a person dies with unconfessed mortal sin on their soul, they are going straight to hell.

Purgatory is not a second chance to ask for forgiveness and try to “get into heaven”.

While you’re right to a point, these kind of declarations always raise red flags with me. After all, it is God’s decision as to whom will and will not be condemned to hell–or, more accurately, who condemn themselves to hell. There are a lot of gray areas, for example, which we must just leave up to the mercy of God–e.g. those of the Jewish faith who fail to accept Christ, but represent God’s chosen, special people on earth. Since we’re not in charge of judgement, I’d take care at the blanket statements regarding who will and will not be going to hell. When you get right down to it, it really is none of our business anyway. If God wants to save all of the Jewish people, it’s fine by me. He can bend any of His rules that he’d like to–after all, they’re His rules. Let’s let God be God, and we can just be the simple believers we are…

It is a spiritual process like sanctification as it’s effect is on one’s soul. This is probably the most ecumenical way of thinking of the process of preparing to face God. Remember - it has NOTHING to do with FORGIVENESS OF SIN - Christ accomplished that, and “whoever is in Christ is a new creation”. It simply deals with the unholy effects of the sins: we need to be clean to enter Heaven and that is what the process of Purgatory accomplishes.

I don’t think it is technically accurate to describe the process of sanctification which undoubtedly occurs here on earth as being a part of “Purgatory”. I understand why this has been brought up, and they are analogous processes, but I believe Purgatory, technically, is a post judgement experience. Perhaps sanctification is a broader category which can be divided into two categories: 1) prejudgemental (ie earthly) and 2) postjudgemental (ie Purgatory). Yea, I like that. That’s easier to think of.
 
Maybe I should have said that the Jews are no longer God’s chosen people, unless you consider Catholics to be Messianic Jews. 😉 (technically we are) Anyways, it has always been traditional Christian teaching that God’s covenant with the Jews ended with Christ and a new one was formed with His believers, members of the Church, making them the true People of God (a phrase the pope uses often when referring to Catholics). It is a recent idea of Evangelical Protestants that have allied themselves with Zionists that the Jews are the people of God. I’ll listen to the Church rather than Evangelicals. 👍

I beg to differ… I suggest you read Father Schoeman’s book entitled *Salvation is from the Jews. *The book’s website is also found at salvationisfromthejews.com/ . While Christians can be seen as partakers of the New Covenant, it does not mean that the Jews no longer hold any special place of honor.
