Doubting, I’m so sorry to read about how rough things have been between you and your mom! 😦 I’ll offer my next Rosary for you, especially invoking our most loving Mother, Our Lady of Fatima, whose memorial is today.

Thank you for coming here; most of us have gone through things that make us question our Faith, but faithful friends like those you can make here have helped us appreciate the beauty of the Faith. Our Faith, in the end, is the best thing we have, the “pearl of great price.”

The Faith helps me love my three children more than I otherwise could! 🙂 The “rules” are there for our protection and when we fail, we need to Confess and begin again, every single time!

I’ve found that, though it is very hard, it is essential to forgive as Christ taught us, even if the person who hurt us isn’t sorry and keeps on hurting us. Christ longs to help us to forgive as He did on the Cross. He forgave those who were murdering Him even as they were doing it! Wow! It is not healthy for our souls or our minds to carry around the weight of what others have done to wrong us.

In addition, we can make good spiritual use of our crosses by offering our sufferings for the well-being of others – our loved ones, those who are far from God, etc.

May God bless you and your mom!

Kristen

To clarify, I grew up in a strict Roman Catholic family. 12 years of Catholic school. Grew up without love from my mother. Only emotion I ever knew was fear. The Church was always right; despite it’s own sins. Was told at an early age that I was going to Hell for taking communion at a Protestant Church and that she would support the Pope and the Church sending me there. A life of abuse and neglect which caused me to break all ties 18 months ago after she told me to go “F” myself on Christmas Eve.

So, does strict adherence to Catholic dogma drive a wedge between a mother and her children.
Doubting Catholic, I am so sorry you had a terrible and sad childhood. My dh also had a terrible mom and very abusive. She hates the Church today. She blames the Catholic Church for staying in her marriage for priest told her it would be wrong to divorce. Her husband use to beat her too and the kids. She finally left him after 25 years of marriage, but unfortunately both her and her husband ruined the kids for life. My dh still fights the demons of that dysfunction he grew up with. So your mother was not a good mother and it is terrible that she talks to you the way she does. Staying apart might be the best thing and maybe someday, your relationship with her will heal, but it is not the Catholic Churches fault. It sounds to me that you are hurting very much and seeking consolation and warmth of others. We here on the forum will pray for you to heal from your broken heart and your past. It is all possible with Jesus for NOTHING is impossible for God, but you have to let Him in and allow Him to heal you.

The Catholic Church is perfect for your situation. You can heal by receiving all the Sacraments and you can call Our Heavenly Mother Mary, your mother. She can be the mother you never had. I am sure she was with you in your childhood, but you were not told so. I think child abuse is very sad and it messes up children who become adults that lacked something. Please ask our Blessed Mother Mary to be your mother and pray for you and your heart to heal. Today being the feast of Our Lady of Fatima, ask her today and she will not disappoint you. You have to be able to change and forgive your mother. It may be a difficult task to do and it may take time, but you, with God’s help, can do it. My dh didn’t forgive his mother for years. He finally forgave her at the age of 35. They have a nice, but not close, relationship now. That is okay, it is a beginning.

If you doubt the Catholic Church, educate yourself on it and what she really teaches. She does not cause child and parent to hate each other. It teaches what Christ taught and teaches, love and forgiveness.

I will be praying for you. Peace and God Bless you!

(((((Doubting)))))

You’ve gotten excellent info from the previous posters. I too, had a troubled relationship with my mother, and I think we hated each other at times. I don’t know how old your mother is, but she probably lost in the black hole of confusion that Vatican II sparked.

I hope you post more. There are a lot of wise people here.

Your mother being crazy has nothing to do with her being Catholic.
I totally agree with this statement! The OP’s mother obviously had ‘problems’, mental or otherwise, that made her behave so unfeeling towards her own child, but you can’t blame the Church for that!
