Does chewing gum break the pre-Mass Fast?

Would chewing gum, or drinking water, break the fast we are supposed to observe one hour before Mass?

We are permitted to drink water and take medicine during the hour before Holy Communion. I don’t think there is a prohibition on gum, but it does seem to be contrary to the spirit of fasting. Chewing gum actually inside the church just strikes me as rude. I would hope no-one would do that, although I have seen evidence of it as some horrible people stick their old gum under the pews!

Thank you both very much for the info, especially the links. The only reason I ever chew gum before Mass is as a breath freshener, especially if I don’t have time to brush my teeth beforehand. I always spit it out before going into the church. Chewing gum inside the church and, even more so, chewing gum while going to receive the Eucharist is inconceivably inappropriate to me.
