Not sure if this question is already out there and I’m sorry if it is.

If you confess your sins and then commit one of those sins again after the confession does it make all your other confessed sins invalid or only the ones you have re-committed which should then be re-confessed?

Thanks

Confessed and forgiven sins do not “revive.” One need only confess mortal sins committed since the last confession.

An absolved sin is in the past. Whatever sin you do after that, even if the subsequent sin is the same kind of sin, is a new sin; not “re-committed.” It would be confessed, not “re-confessed.”

Committing the same kind of sin again does not “invalidate” your previous confession of that kind of sin or any of your other sins. An absolved sin is absolved. Period. God doesn’t take back his forgiveness.

If you find that you are committing the same sin repeatedly, talk this over in confession with the priest. Ask him for guidance on how to avoid occasions that lead you to this sin, and how to remain strong in the face of temptation of this sin.

I totally do not understand the question.
It quite frequently happens, because of our fallen human nature, that we commit the same sins frequently. We simply confess everytime it is necessary. As long as you sincerely try to remember and confess all your sins, and do not deliberately withhold a sin in confession, they all are forgiven, even those you have forgotten. If you subsequently fall into sin again, that does not retroactively affect previous confessions. Just go to confession again, and pursue all spiritual means to fight against this inclination to sin.

If committing the same sin twice cancels out the confession, we are all doomed!

I have not only committed the same sins twice, but many, many more times than that. As long as you are faithful to confess it, it will be absolved each time. DEO GRATIAS!

Mary
