When fasting I eat one meal a day and occasionally a snack if i am desperate for food. When you eat the one meal would it be a violation of the fast. Today my mom made this great dessert she never made before I wanted to eat but I was not sure so I did not eat it.

(FYI my family is not Catholic I’m just one of those kids/teenagers waiting to convert)

I’m glad you didn’t, because even tho’ it doesn’t break the letter of the law, it certainly breaks the spirit of the law! Can a piece of it be frozen for the Easter season?

Thank you!

The only time I take dessert on Sunday which is not a fast day EVER. This does not break the spirit of the fast? (just to make sure)

You are doing great! I don’t think Sundays are days we have to fast so perhaps your mom would save you a piece and you can have it then

Um, how old are you? No one under the age of 18 is bound by laws of fast, it might not be a good thing for a younger teenager to do either. Fasting is never done at the risk of your health.

I just read this last comment. I am not fasting to the point that I faint or whatever. If ever I really need to eat I eat snacks. Really the only thing i skip is lunch at school and i’ve done that a lot when not fasting to catch up on home work. I also believe that the church does start the age for required abstinence on fridays and Ash Wednesday at 15. I looked that stuff of a long time ago.

You seem to be confusing fasting and abstaining. They are different.
Abstaining from meat kicks in at age 14 but for fasting you must be at least 18.

The Ash Wednesday and Good Friday fasts oblige you not to exceed one main meal **and two smaller meals **which together do not exceed the main meal.

But your own rules regarding fasts for the rest of the year are yours.

If your under 18 I’d strongly encourage you to eat 3 full meals a day and just give up snacking in between meals and maybe something like sweets and soda. Growing teens need to eat and skipping lunch is general a bad idea period.

At age 14, one is required to abstain from meat, but fasting is not required until age 18. So eat your lunch!! 😃

My dear friend in Christ,

You ask such wonderful and thoughtful question.:clapping: :tiphat:

Go ahead and eat it if that is what you want to do, no sin involved.

We are speaking here not only of a matter of “Church practice,” but one step lower, our choice of how we are going to perform this paractice. (This is one of those rare opportunites where we are permitted to decide for ourselves:) ).

The only parts of the Moral Obligation that can’t be changed are who is obligated: “all healthy Catholics age 14+ to 1 st. day of age 60.” And abstainence from meet on all Friday’s in Lent.

Additionally Ash Wed. and Good Friday, are day’s of "complete fast; meaning not only no meat, but only on full meal.

What ever additional pious acts we perfrom, partial fasting, additional good works, or spiritual works, factor in our persoanl relationship with God, and what we desire to offter, purely out of Love for God.

In your example you could have (your persoanl option) eaten mom’s desert, and substituted something else or nothing else, unless it was Ash Wednesday or Good Friday, then, you could, but what you did was better:D

Love and prayers,

Don’t take my advice as “letter of the law” - but Church rules re fasting (on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday) include one FULL meal and two smaller (not amounting to full meals). In my opinion, one full meal might be up to the individual - no desert OR a full meal, including desert, but just one serving.

I’m a heavy coffee drinker but I don’t eat 3 full meals a day all the time around the year. So, on a fast day - I try to have just one cup of coffee in the morning but none during the day - eating only the one permitted full meal but NO small meals - no snacking. Otherwise, it would be too much like a normal day for me. Nothing else. Either one serving of a desert, if it’s served. But that’s it until after midnight.

I don’t think desert violates a fast and believe you have to not only follow Church rules - but base your obedience on what your normal day’s intake is - keep everything in more limited than a regular day, provided you’re in the required ages.
God bless you.

Turn to God with love, not with worrying about food.

Discipline is what you do. And you are too young to fast. Food is Good, too. The right amount of food, and good, nourishing food, not empty calories from McFastFingerLickingSubWeightWayLoss

If you start the discipline of turning to God with love, it will stand you in good stead all your life. That is the most important thing.

I’ve decided to reach a happy compromise. The point of fasting and other exorcises is to get closer to God but also to exercise moderation and self-control. I have decide to just be moderate on things. To exercise moderation on t.v., games, dessert, etc.

Thank you 🙂

Good job, LMH. I’m also a closet catholic, as you put it. I gave up manga, and all drinks but water.

Its insane. You have know idea how much I want to read the new releases on onemanga.com:eek: :crying:

In a word, yes. Always yes. A fast is one full meal, two half meals. Nothing more. No desserts included.
