I don’t believe so, no. I have seen things which I can’t fathom have any greater reason. I think God set the universe to operate under certain natural laws, which do allow for random chance.

Everytime you hear a child, anyone for that matter getting abused in any way…and someone says…everything happens for a reason?
Dear brothers and sisters, every human, has a FREE WILL.
that is the reason, that is NOT Gods will.

I voted yes, but I should clarify. My belief is that every natural, “chance” event that occurs happens because God wants it to. He has some reason for making it happen. That being said, our free will allows us to commit actions that do not jive with God’s plan. So, I think that human actions are the only events that sometimes do not have a bigger purpose or plan behind them.

I know your heart means well, in saying that, because God is in control of all things…
With that said, I understand what you mean (I used to say "everything happens for a reason myself) until I came across a person that had LITTLE faith and just got raped.
From the very begining Adam and Eve days…God cleary “wanted” His children to live in paradise♥free will is a gift, to accept His love and we disobeyed instruction. God did not “WANT” that to happen, and Glory to God he paid the ultimate price

I grew up and was abused and raped by my stepfather. And my biological father wanted me aborted…and bless my fathers heart, he wanted a boy…i was a girl…(and this is first time I share this in an open public space) I just feel after much prayer, that it is necessary, that us christians need to CHOOSE differentt words, the last thing a person wants to hear after such tragedy is “everything happens for a reason” a christian may be able to handle those words…but think about it…our mission is to bring those to non- believers to know God♥
Just know this comes from love in my heart, and my entire life even at as young age of 9. My mission has always been to LOVE UNCONDITIONALLY, FORGIVE, AND BRING OTHERS CLOSE TO JESUS♥…(yes, even after all the tragedy)
…us christians all know the power of the almighty♥

Tonyrey, what do you think of quantum virtual particles popping in and out of existence for no “reason”, i.e., events without causes.
Natural laws themselves exist for a reason but that is a different matter.
Lewis Carroll’s Alice might say it would be a bit topsy-turvy.
Einstein would go into a funk.
And Aristotle would resort to the bottle.

Romans 8:28 We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.
While I answered “yes” in the poll, I think that while there may seem to be no reason behind some stuff, God is still able to work it out for our good. Yes, people make bad choices, including those that hurt little children. I may not have the answer here, but God does. And I’m learning to lean on him because of this.

If it’s confusing, then we need to find a better way of saying it. I know we go through a lot in this life that we don’t understand. In the end, it doesn’t matter if we understand or not. When we see God face to face, a whole lot will be understood. Yes, this life sucks. But this is actually a verse about hope. We need to learn to trust a whole lot more. I know I do.

Of course “everything happens for a reason.” That’s why I hate that saying. Someone name one thing that did not happen for a reason.

I tend to believe so, so often but I like to think that Triumphguy is correct with this saying.
I find it hard to really believe that everything happens for a reason when sometimes horrible and unfortunate things happen to people who “seem” undeserving and vice-versa.

But who decides on who is “deserving” or not? Maybe it isn’t about “deserving.” Did I “deserve” to be diagnosed as mentally ill? I hate having it, but I have to learn to live with it. And I think it is helping me to know how weak I truly am without God in my life. Without Him, life would truly be not worth living.

It depends what you mean by ‘reason’.
If you propose that everything happens because it’s caused by previous events, then the answer is (as best we can ascertain at present) that most phenomena of which we have any real awareness are caused by antecedent states of affairs; but there are still some things which (at least at a quantum level) are genuinely random, and in that sense uncaused.
If by ‘reason’ you mean conscious intent on the part of a being with some kind of plan, then it’s fair to say that many things happen for a reason in that they are intentionally brought about by said conscious beings - mammals, for example, like ourselves, make (or at least try to make) things happen all the time. But it’s also fair to say that many other things happen without any intentional or even apparent influence from conscious beings.
When people say things like, “Everything happens for a reason,” I have come to think of this as a coping strategy, a way of fitting (generally unpleasant) events into the narratives we construct of our lives. As such, it’s very much an after-the-fact process, undertaken by looking back at what events or situations resulted from certain experiences we had in the past. One can, of course, undertake this process without supposing that anyone intended bad things to happen to them.
Personally, I think it’s actually quite disgusting to suggest that an all-powerful, divine being intends certain things to happen to people to “teach them a lesson” or bring about some kind of change in their perception, or - more often than is tolerable, really - break them down to a blubbering, helpless-feeling mess so that they call on some sort of god in their despair; the latter is how organisations like Alcoholics Anonymous ply their trade.
There’s no doubt that we are capable of learning from our experiences, but there’s the small issue of balance - just as some punishments far outweigh their crimes, some lessons (if such they are) are delivered with far more severity than is really necessary to learn them.
