Does EWTN Help or Hurt?

I love EWTN and have it on just about all my waking hours when I am home. Bishop Fulton Sheen couldn’t have had much of a budget. He seemed to just have had a blackboard and an angel.

I find 99% of the programing to be done very well and is very educational. They do an excellent job in presenting the Faith in an orthodox manner. My husband love it too. What they do is not cheap.

I love the devotions. On my Moxi cable box I have recorded all the litanies. My favorite is the Litany of the Sacred Heart and also the Litany of the Precious Blood. I especially love Bishop Fulton Sheen’s old shows. He is unbelievable how he explains modernism, communism, philosophy, theology, and our faith. The bible study shows are terrific.

EWTN has helped me alot personally. I began to watch it when JPII died. That is when I realized that I must be Catholic. I watched Mass every day then so when I finally went to mass at my local parish, I didn’t feel so out of place. Since that time I have gone through RCIA and become an official Catholic. I still watch almost daily and like many here The Journey Home is one of my favorites, along with Life on the Rock, The World Over, EWTN Live and several others. For someone wanting to learn more about the Catholic faith, EWTN is a good resource.

I’m suprised that no one has mentioned those AMAZING theatrical monologues. At least that is what I think they are. You know, when they dress up as a saint and act out something that the saint has written or said.

I think they are fantastic and I’ve never seen anything like it on any other channel. The first time I saw one it was this beautiful young girl with such passion in her speech that she was near tears, I didn’t know it was a ‘re-enactment’ and thought she happened to be from the middle-east and was giving her own speech about faith. It took me a little bit to understand.
That has to be worth tons of ‘props’

As for the programming that they could add:
  1. Reality based shows like discerning a vocation or maybe a t.v. version of those Catholic blogs on the net (like a look into a practicing Catholics family life)
  2. Live Eucharist Congress (maybe they already do that)
  3. Visits to parishes around the world, maybe they could even have a request for people to make videos of their parish community (their masses, ministries, activities) and turn them in. The winner(s) would have their video on air and get a small prize)
Also, wouldn’t it be great if they opened up internships in broadcasting for Catholic students?
  1. I know that The Rosary Army has video files of That Catholic Show, maybe they could donate a couple of episodes to be viewed on television. That would be very very cool. It would help out EWTN AND Rosary Army imho,
  2. Finally, It would be nice if they invited people to come and share their Rosary/Eucharist/Prayer/Mass miracles with them. There are books about these miracles, maybe they could interview some of the people.

chanting NUNS: To me they are the definition of Matthew 6:7 But when ye pray use not vain repetition.
Sure, sure. You know those cloistered nuns—always looking for attention.

Understand the rosary and you will understand it’s not vain repetition. The rosary is a meditation on the mysteries of Christ.

As we look at the passage of Mt 6, we see that He is talking about hypocrites—those who stand on street corners and babble their prayers over and over in order to be seen as pious.

Cloistered nuns glimpsed on television for the express purpose of leading others (mostly senior citizens and shut-ins) in prayer and meditation of Christ is about as far from vanity as one can get, friend.

It irks me when people use Mt 6 against the rosary. Actually reading the Word of God, as opposed to repeating the words “vain repetiton” seems the best remedy here.

Reading that particular passage puts me in mind of the televangelists and their all-too-public and babblingly-long prayers which are often supplemented with crocodile tears and false emotion.

The passage is not about being against structured prayer.
The passage is about being a hypocrite.

Read the passage and see that what is condemned is babbling, showy prayer paraded about only to impress others.

Ever notice that this passage is immediately followed by a structured prayer which we have been repeating now for 2000 years??? It’s called the Our Father.

For anyone who doubts God’s acceptance of repetition—try reading Psalm 136.

Corapi:thumbsup:
groechsel: 👍
Are you serious? Aren;t they too Catholic for you?!
chanting NUNS: To me they are the definition of Matthew 6:7 But when ye pray use not vain repetition.
The count scares me…😊
Ok, mfm, I agree with you, they look hot, bored and unenthusiastic. However, take into account that this taping occurred after Mother Angelica had her stroke, and they were taping for five hours. You would probably look the same way if you were trying to do a 20 min prayer and it took that long!
I like it best when the put on davey and goliath…👍 👍
That is one of my favorites too! Budget 1960’s entertainment.

“Daaaaaavy…I don’t think you should do that” How I loved that show. 🙂 Corny, but it beat the Ninja"beat everyone up" cartoons and I always got the moral of the story.

Me thinks you suffer from hatred of chant.

I love EWTN, especially “Sunday Night Live with Fr. Benedict Groeschel”!

Fr. Corapi is great! I like to watch his program. I don’t have cable, but I usually go over my mom’s house on Sunday and watch Fr. Corapi with her since she has cable. She loves his show too. He is the best preacher that I have ever heard.

You’re addressing the wrong poster. Guanophore does not hate chant. He was addressing another poster who did not understand chant.
Indeed not. I especially love the Gregorian! I have only recently learned to enjoy the chant of the Rosary, and one of the things I love about Mother’s is that she changes the cadence on the different mysteries. It is very subtle.

First I must say that I am an EWTN Media Missionary, and I support the network finacially when I can. I am very surprised
at the negative comments about the network. EWTN has
saved many souls, we have several on this thread that have
already attested to that fact. As far as the production value is
concerned, I agree with the others, it is the content that counts.
I have learned so much through the television and radio shows
and I will be forever grateful. EWTN had aleady helped and will
continue to help countless people. Of course different shows
will appeal more to some than others but I suggest checking out
some new ones you haven’t seen before!

I think I finally got fed up with EWTN when they advertised Fr. Corapi recently and what DID we get instead? Daily Mass…

Frankly I don’t see the point of sitting there watching the Mass when you can go attend one. Unless there homebound and even then does EWTN REALLY have to show it four or five times a day.

Why not shows EXPLAINING the Mass. Plus while the Mass is the main thing about Catholicism it is by no means the only thing, there is so much more that could be done but there not doing it.

I’m going by what I see when I tune in at different times of the day on different days for the last few weeks.

The one that still throughs me is the Father Corapi program. My tellyguide said 1PM EWTN said 1PM…

An then… Daily Mass…

There’s the grid as to what comes on when on EWTN. I don’t think CW001 is really realistically representing EWTN’s programming.

Personally, I like EWTN a lot!
Me too.

Here’s some of my favorites in no particular order…

FATHER JOHN CORAPI (I like his military take on faith)
LETTER AND SPIRIT (since I’ve come across Scott Hahn, I’ve been very impressed with his ability to explain Catholic doctrines, especially those concerning Mary and the Mass).
ROME REPORTS
CHAPLET OF DIVINE MERCY IN SONG
LIFE IS WORTH LIVING (even if it is in black and white I still like it a lot)
FR. CORAPI & THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH (see notes above)
G.K. CHESTERTON: APOSTLE OF COMMON SENSE
SUNDAY NIGHT LIVE WITH FATHER GROESCHEL
WEB OF FAITH
THRESHOLD OF HOPE
CHRIST IN THE CITY (I like the way he talks so slowly and calmly, yet places it in the right perspective each and every time)
SUPER SAINTS (yes, it’s low budget, but so what? It’s still good)
DEFENDING LIFE
THE JOURNEY HOME

I also occasionally pray the rosary with MOTHER ANGELICA & THE NUNS OF OLAM at the late 9:30PM slot (it’s 10:30 here when it comes on in Atlantic time). I don’t do this all the time though. I should do it more often.

I also like to have the DAILY MASS playing in the background even if I’m not actually sitting down and watching it. I usually listen in the background.

So, yes, one could say I really like EWTN a lot. I’m not sure what people are complaining about to be honest.

Ditto to the above list, but I’ll add one more: The World Over.

please, don,t forget to add fr. thomas dubay to your list.
he is quite good.👍
