Does EWTN Help or Hurt?

I guess it would depend on what stage of the spiritual journey one is on. EWTN for me has been a blessing…no matter what program I watch, be it Life on the Rock or an old movie about a saint, EWTN has for me strengthened my own faith, and it helps reinforce the Teachings of the Church.

The only thing I wish they would have would be some quality contemporary Catholic music programs…but then again, I’m used to the glitz and glam of shows like American Idol…what do I know???

I enjoy EWTN …🤷
Corapi:thumbsup:
groechsel: 👍
chanting NUNS: To me they are the definition of Matthew 6:7 But when ye pray use not vain repetition.
The count scares me…😊
Grodi is okay, though his interviews are a little to slow pitch softball for me.
Life on the rock is okay, but at times the father seems to be flirting with the girls…a little unnerving.

I like it best when the put on davey and goliath…👍 👍

Ever since I found how to watch EWTN here in the UK it has become the channel I watch most often. I love watching Fr. Corapi, Web of Faith, Life on the Rock, For God so lover the World, the show with Frances Hogan, the re-runs of Archbishop Sheen, I love watching the Mass, and many other programs.

I think the channel is fantastic, and living in the UK, where any religious programming (although religious programming is rare on tv) tends to be Anglican, EWTN is a real lifeline to learning, keeping and following the Faith.

I forgot to mention in my previous post that I DO LOVE EWTN. :clapping:

I just wish the Mass and Rosary were not during prime time. I do enjoy them, but older folks go to bed earlier than 9PM in my experience, so would miss Mass anyway. The Rosary is at 6:30 and would be great if Mass followed at 7PM. It is a great station and their schedule is my only complaint. I still watch EWTN as much as I can regardless of the schedule. I am grateful that my cable company carries them, many do not. I have never caught EWTN when traveling, that would be a treat.

I do not get EWTN radio and can’t find it in SF Bay Area. 😦

Peace of Christ be with You! :signofcross:

EWTN Helps a lot.
As others have said they do the bes they can with the resources they have.

You have to remember that EWTN reaches around the world, and what we in “The States” might see as amateurish others see as just fine.

EWTN has maintained a level of independence by not becoming commerical. That means they must rely on us to support them financially. The more $$$ available the higher level of productions they can provide.

As for Mother, well all I can say is she has been and still is an inspiration. God Bless Her.

James

There are some fantastic programs on EWTN, and some programs are boring. The ones many people find boring are the same ones many older folks and shut-ins find most helpful.

There are very real limitations on production dollars at EWTN. They are running a global network on a shoestring budget.

They have so many in-house programs because that’s what they can afford to produce. They are continually strapped for money. Please don’t assume that just because they are “a channel” that they can compete in any way, shape or form with those entities with huge financial backing (i.e. Discovery Channel, History Channel etc). The more money EWTN has, the more and better programs they are able to purchase and/or produce.

To be blunt about it—
If you’re not contributing financially to EWTN then, seriously, DON’T COMPLAIN ABOUT THEIR PROGRAMS.

The question should not be “Does EWTN help or hurt?” but rather “How can we make EWTN even better?”

Answer:
Put your money where your (post) is.

Sure, EWTN does show the Mass a lot. That is its JOB.

I was listening to an old episode of Life on the Rock a while back (I think most of their shows sound a heck of a lot better than they look, so I tend to listen to them on the mp3 player). And the host said exactly that - the Mass, being the most important thing the Church has to offer, and the most important thing we as Catholics do, is deliberately front and center of EWTN’s mission.

As for the Rosary - I don’t really watch the EWTN one but I do pray along with an audio Rosary, and it’s nice to have the idea that people are praying alongside me even when I’m physically on my own.

On EWTN they seem to deliberately have a few different versions of the Rosary, not just Mother and the nuns, and that in itself is interesting, to see how each different version made the Rosary something unique. I especially like the ‘International Rosary’, different people all saying the prayers in their own language.

The only reason I got cable was so I could get EWTN. I like most of it…but those old, old black and white movies could be done away with.
I think all those complaining should try to do something for the good of the church and make a donation to ETWN so they can have better programming to spread the word of God to everyone. 😃 If they can’t donate they can pray for their success.

Of all the EWTN, there are only a few shows I watched:
  1. Pure Life.
  2. Fr. Corapi
  3. Coming Home Network.
Since I am deployed EWTN is not available. I know there are new programs I like to see like:
  1. Pope Fiction - Hosted by Patrick Madrid
  2. The Lamp Supper - By Scott Hahn
  3. CRASH COURSE IN CATHOLICISM - It’s always good to re-learn something you know. Perhaps you’ll caught something you didn’t know about Catholicism.
  4. Jesus Christ: True God and True Man.
  5. Letter and Spirit by Scott Hahn.
  6. Deep in Scripture

but those old, old black and white movies could be done away with.
There is one old movie that I’ve seen twice on EWTN called “Hill Number One.” It is very well done and follows the story of the apostles and Mary from the time Jesus died until His resurrection. It’s very well done and very moving.

I have to credit EWTN for keeping me in the Catholic Church. When I was first struck with a debilitating illness, I was able to watch EWTN for the first time. I learned so much from Mother Angelica, Fr. Corapi, Scott Hahn, Marcus Grodi and so many others. For someone who wasn’t able to attend Mass for several months, it was a blessing to “partake” in Mass through EWTN.

I do agree that some of the shows might seem “boring” but I do think that depends on where we are in our walk of faith and what we are interested in at the time, just like with anything else we choose to watch or not watch. We had to give up EWTN awhile ago because of money, and I miss it dearly. Sometimes we never appreciate what we have until it’s gone.

Over 25 years and still going; they must be doing something right!

Don’t watch TV. Read a good book, pray, go for a walk, talk to someone you love, write a letter, play with your kids, weed your garden, pray, go to the sarcraments, learn latin, give your wife/husband a shoulder massage, pray, paint, cook good food from scratch, read Shakespeare, balance algebra equations, argue with a fool, do the laundry, pray. I don’t believe tv is worth the time we waste on it no matter what’s on. ever

God help them if they ever stop televising the mass, rosary, or the chaplets.

It gives people who are home bound the opportunity to be united in spirit with Christ and His Church during the mass. I’m sure for many it’s a very, very important connection with Jesus before they die. If I was dying at this moment I would definitely rather be watching Mass and praying the Rosary & Chaplets than watching the prosperity gospel from a stadium, or trying to make my last connections with Christ while on earth through sola scriptura or sola fide. Thank God they aren’t the only options anymore!

For the rest of us dvr or tivo is probably the best way to capture everything else.

EWTN in my opinion stays faithful to the magisterium, and presents the fullness of the faith.

When I have down time I would much rather spend it vegging on EWTN than the rest of the junk on cable. mtv, E, fx, networks, hbo, showtime etc. are Novocaine to the soul, the more they are watched the number it becomes. In light of that, and tbn as the alternative, thank you Jesus for EWTN!!!

EWTN ROCKS!

I most time am doing something else while listening cleaning. cooking even on the computer while I say the chaplet.

I like the homelike atmosphere on it and they all seem so real and not tooprofessional, which I like.

I watched the archbishop O’Brien of Baltimore, celebration of the mass the other day, it was long but beautiful and I had never seen one like it.

It is aimed at Catholics so it isn’t likely to draw the attention of many non-Catholics. They just aren’t the target audience.

In fact, I would go so far as to say it’s target audience is the poorly catechized generation of Catholics. That’s why some of the shows seem simplistic to CAF participants who tend to be better (self) catechized. 🙂

I enjoy the kids shows, especially Angel Force (I am not sure they still show that one). It is a refreshing change from the cartoons.

But more than anything, I was sooooooo grateful for EWTN when Pope John Paul II died and during the conclave. There was no other source for true Catholic commentary that resonated with our sorrow and subsequent joy.

there are a number of converts in these forums who credit EWTN for their conversion, so i wouldn’t say that it is for catholics only. it is for people who are searching, catholic and non-catholic alike.

while i rarely watch it (i don’t have cable) i enjoy listening to the programs that they podcast. once in awhile i catch a homily that is so moving, it brings me to tears. :getholy: :heaven:

I’m really surprised at all the people here who don’t like EWTN. If my cable company got rid of EWTN, I would get rid of my cable.

And, we should keep Mother Angelica on the air as long as she wants to stay there. Yes, she’s disabled, but her life still has meaning, and she is an inspiration to everyone–especially the elderly and the sick. While she will never be able to play the role she once did at the station, we EWTN fans still love her and care about her and like to see how she is doing from time to time.

As far as the production quality of the shows, I never considered that they were low budget. If they are, I think it makes them more endearing. So many shows today are all production and no substance, so I really don’t pay too much attention to the production.

There are a lot of very informative shows you can download from the EWTN library audio archives. I just listened to a really good series on Cardinal Newman by Fr CJ McCloskey. Fr Thomas Dubay has several good series too.
