Does fighting sin make you stronger or weaker?

I mean when you come close to committing a sin but move away from it. Does it make you stronger because you rejected the sin or weaker because it took a lot to fight it; kind of like fighting a strong man who leaves you badly injured?

Thanks.

It makes you stronger.
Every time you reject a sin, that rejection makes it easier for you to reject that same sin the next time. Just like committing a sin makes it easier to commit that same sin the next time. It becomes a habit. This is why one should be patient with oneself when tying to get over a specific habitual sin; it takes time and effort to get beyond that particular sin. The sacrament of confession and a good spiritual director who knows one’s background would be important to overcome a particular sin.

2 ways to gain grace to fight sin temptations and hence make it easier to resist in the future.
  1. Go to Confession after you commit the sin
  2. Resist the Temptation

I like this question a lot. Could the answer be both? We are stronger for having avoided the sin and having gained the experience in doing so, but are weakened by the struggle. Perhaps over time and depending on the sin, we find that the struggle is no longer necessary. Therefore, strength wins in the end?

Depends on how you fight it. If you don’t go the root cause and determine why a particular action, though sinful, is appealing, you haven’t gained anything. That situation will constantly affect you. If on the other hand, you develop an understanding of the nature of the action, seek out the proper understanding of why it is sinful and choose the opposite course of action or way of thinking, it will strengthen you in the long run.

For example. A person is fascinated by pornography but realizes their use of it is sinful, they can just avoid porn materials, shut their eyes and turn their back. Problem is, when confronted by it again, that person will be affected the same way. If on the other hand, one seeks an understanding of the nature of porn, the objectification of another and a malicious choice to abuse(another or oneself) and the beauty of God’s intention for human sexuality and its proper expression in a relationship where God is an invited and distinguished guest in the relationship of man, woman, and Creator, out of love for the God that gave us that great gift of human sexual expression, one doesn’t not want to offend the giver of such a great gift. Find a way to make the opposite of the sin to be committed the more desirable option.

My two cents (I miss the old emoji!!!)
