Does God care what we wear to church?

I think God cares that we try and understand and humbly accept what is happening at Church, and if we can’t understand it, that we humbly accept it.

If we accept what is happening at Church, we will want to dress in a way that leaves the glory on the altar and doesn’t focus glory upon ourselves.

I think he cares more about the state of our soul, and if we are affecting the state of another person’s soul, than the types of linen we have hanging on us.

So there is low hanging fruit here - say wearing something with writing or a picture on the back, it can take the focus of others from the altar to our shirt.

Pax Christi.

My previous post is.

Our Lady lamented immodest fashions in general, not dress for Mass in particular.

I believe one of Peter’s epistles condemns judging thise who do not wear fine clothes to church. Can’t remember the chapter or verse.

God bless.
I think I misread your post too, since you were talking about Mary and then said “I know for certain my mother hates it when people wear shorts to church” I thought you were talking about mother Mary! But after that I reread and realize you may be talking about your actual mother!

I lol’d because I thought…wow of all the things in the world the Blessed Mother has a beef with short pants!

I’d say God doesn’t care how you look, but YOU do. The reason we should dress up for mass is because how we act illustrates what we believe.

When you don an old Tshirt, raggedy jeans and muddy sneakers instead of the neat slacks, pressed shirts and dress shoes that are right there in the closet, you are sending God and the world a message. You are saying that you are engaging in an informal routine that you’ve done a thousand times out of habit and custom and that it’s not a big deal for you.

I can’t comprehend how it could be anything else. Mass is an opportunity to be supernaturally transported through time and space to be present at the moment Christ died on the cross in willing sacrifice atoning for our sins. I’m going to wear a faded sports jersey to that? I don’t think so.

On the other hand, I don’t wear a suit. I hate suits and to me the wearing of a suit and tie is a sign of bondage. I wear dress shirts, slacks and decent shoes. That sends the message I believe should be sent. I’m fine with those that love suits wearing them. I just don’t think God expects us to consider ourselves in bondage to Him. Rather, we’ve been given TRUE freedom through repentance and obedience.

That was actually my original post. And yes, I was referring to my biological mother. And who knows? Maybe our Blessed Mother really hates shorts, too!

I seriously doubt God cares as much about what we wear to church as we do, except in the case of outright blatant immodesty. We seem to have developed the habit of telling God (and others) what He should think. 🙂
👍

:bowdown2: This is exactly what I was trying to convey.

I think God cares about our individual conscience concerning the matter, that if we feel a certain set of clothes are respectable or not. God also cares about how other Christians affect each other and if Saint Paul is to be taken at this, we can use his words concerning wounding each other’s practice by causing them to guilt or offence in not only eating certain foods but in dressing in certain ways. If a man was to come in his shorts and a tight t-shirt it might not seem appropriate to the entire congregation, likewise if a woman was to come to church in the same outfit.

Seems to me we should think about not only God but others in the church community as well. So we should probably wear clothes which demonstrate our respect for the holiness of the sanctuary we attend to be of a clean conscience ourselves and not offend others.

I would say you don’t know people’s story what ever they are wearing might be their Sunday best or they were running late and that’s what they had on. The only thing that bothers me is people who wear distracting cloths a women had leather pants, a tank top and tall heels at mass this weeks she looked like she was looking for attention

What is a “ratchet” and do you truly wear your pyjamas to Mass? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
If anyone wants to know how I feel about this it is basically all in the song “church clothes” by Lecrae, if you don’t like rap I wouldn’t suggest watching this video. I have only been to Mass a few times so I have not had a chance yet.

Let me just say that if I was aloud to post pictures on this site I would probably be banned for posting a picture of a ratchet. Normally a girl would be called a ratchet if she wore skin tight and revealing clothing, probably had on fishnet stockings, is overweight, and has on at least 6" heels. Basically if you dress like a hooker and are not one. This term is probably out of style now.

If someone came in looking like a hooker and was one I think he or she should be welcomed.

I noticed at church last Sunday a variety of people dressed up in a variety of ways. Please forgive me for noticing such trivial things – I have A D D and sometimes get a little distracted.

For example, there were men in suits and ties, women in dresses, folks (like me) in business casual (khaki pants and a nice shirt), people in tee shirts and jeans, etc, and almost everything in between.

The women in general looked a little nicer than the men, but isn’t that always the case? 🙂

Most wore nice shoes while others wore gym shoes, boots, etc. The styles and fashions ran the gamut. One elderly lady even came in wearing a very old-fashioned flowery hat that looked like something out of ‘Gone with the Wind’. “Frankly, Scarlet…” 😃

Another example were our ushers. There was one lady usher in a church-sponsored tee shirt (had our church’s name on it and indicated she is part of a team that serves). Most men ushers were clean-cut and wore dress pants and nice shirts, while one usher looked like a biker guy with a bandana and beard and a pony tail.

I began to think to myself, “Is this typical of most churches?”
and
Does God care what we wear to church?

*Your thoughts? *

Note:
I grew up in an era when what you wore to church was considered a reflection of your attitude and respect to God, but I realize others may see things differently today. God bless :tiphat:
