Im trying to sample what percentage of population believes in God

internet surveys, most especially on a topic specific messageboard, are hardly valid population sampling

i would say more than 80% of the people here believe in God

go to an atheist forum and you’ll probably get the exact opposite

Some how, I doubt your results will be repersentitive of the population as a whole… But yes, of course I beleive in God… And personally I wish real world percentages more closely reflected the results I expect for this poll.

there is a scientific way to do that, but not on a message board. i highly doubt that message boards will ever be a good sample of any population. unless of course your sampling the message board itself. like, “how many users of CAF are actually Catholic”

This isn’t exactly the best place for such a poll.

You’d need to find a forum that represents a good cross section of whatever population your trying to address and then make sure you get a representative sample of respondents from that demographic.

That said it does amaze me how many Atheist visit a Catholic forum.

It is rather amazing, though I’ve been on secular forums where there are a lot of folks who come to debate too. As long as it’s in a respectful spirit of genuine reflection and knowledge-seeking, I think all should be welcome!

Anyway, cajhockey, your poll results are going to be heavily skewed by the demographics of this message board.

Three things:
  1. The reason that Jesus founded The Catholic Church is to worship of God.
  2. If someone doesn’t believe in God, they are not Catholic.
  3. Only if a non-Catholic answers will there be a no.

Gallup says 15% of Americans are “no specific religion”, and of that number, something like half regularly pray, so even though they aren’t persuaded to follow any specific religion right now, they believe in God or a pantheon of some kind. They say 77% are Christian and around 2% Jewish, half a percent Muslim, and that’s already four out of five who are monotheists (believers in one God). A few might be members of other monotheistic religions. Apparetnly around one in 20 or one in 25 or so are polytheists. American polytheists in my experience are usually neo-pagans and Hindus, but then where I live might not be a good sample population either. Maybe if I lived in another place I would find more West African pagans, e.g.
Is it Americans you want to sample, forum users, or CAF posters?
By the way, how many of us here are Americans?

Aha! Here’s Gallup. This is from a year ago, and the results change from year to year, and even fluctuate within a year.
