Does God forgive and forget sins or just forgive them?

After you confess your sins, does God both forgive and forget your sins, or does He just forgive them even though He’ll always remember them? Which is right?

I have always thought He forgives and forgets.
If you are genuinely sorry for committing them.
Once He cleanses you, He only see you as clean from then on
or until you sin again.
We don’t forget them though,
that helps us not to make the same mistake again.

:tiphat:

I think if you truly repent, then it’s both. I’d be interested in others opinions.

I think He can’t forget. He’s the ultimate elephant. I mean we’re not going to forget the sins committed against us. So when we’re in heaven we’re not going to be able to have info outside of God’s own knowledge. So I think He’s all good with just forgiving and acting like He forgets. But He’ll always know it was you who stole the cookie at grandma’s. And blamed it on your brother. And maybe He’ll chuckle about that with you some time. I don’t know.

Peace.

If you believe the position of the Catholic Church regarding God’s being outside of time and consequently simultaneously in the past, present, and future as well as their sole sustainer, then you would have to agree that our sins will never be forgotten lest our free will be destroyed by God’s interference through his eternal presence in our past. Effectively altering our future and the need for our being forgiven in our pasts future.

If God forgot our sins, how would He know how long we need to spend in purgatory? Or, would anyone be in purgatory because there is no knowledge of the sin?

But then again…

Jeremiah 31:
No longer will they teach their neighbor,
or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know me,
from the least of them to the greatest,”
declares the Lord.
“For I will forgive their wickedness
and will remember their sins no more.”

So I guess God will not remember them.

He remembers them like stains that
HAVE BEEN WASHED away from
a sheet and made clean.
“come, lets us reason together,
says the Lord:
tho your sins be like scarlet,
they shall be white as snow”!
(ref?)

I don’t think it’s so much “forget” as in the human way of forgetting.
Clearly He does not bring them forward and re-break the relationship the way the sin did in the first place.
If that were so, then none of these death bed conversions would hold water.
We say that God truly forgives. We ourselves are called to forgive repeatedly.
I don’t know of anyplace where we are told to forgive, and that we also justified in bringing it up later. Once we forgive, that’s supposed to be it.
So forget? More like He doesn’t revisit and dwell on our sins once we repent and return to Him.

I would hope He would not forget… Someone needs to keep in track so that they can properly correct me! :o

I think in terms of ‘forgetting’, I think it just means that God does not hold it against you if you repented. I don’t believe He actually forgets- How can the Omnipotent forget? At least, that is my take… which is strictly personal opinion. I have heard the old adage before that He forgets. Does anyone know if that is in Holy Scripture?

I believe He forgets and forgives. After all, why would He want to remember them? It is us, with our limited knowledge, who won’t forget. There is a song I really like by Morgan Cryar called “What sin?” In it, our sins are “buried in the sea of forgetfulness.” As has already been quoted, the verse about “their sins I will remember no more.” When He forgives, it’s with completeness that we can’t understand. We need only to ask once to receive forgiveness. We are the ones who keep bringing the old sins up. It isn’t God who keeps on bringing them up.

Not necessarily, if you refer to your Greek lexicon you will see that in this instance the word remember most likely means to “not cause to be recounted or mentioned again.” Not necessarily forgotten altogether.

As I’ve said, I believe it is impossible for God to forget. It would mean destroying the relationship he has with reality, the reality which he caused to come into being, and his temporal permanence throughout it. It would mean a mutable God. It would eliminate a central attribute, namely his being immutable with no potential.
The word used in the James quote can mean to simply not be caused to be recalled or mentioned, presumably to us, after it has been forgiven.

Isaiah 65. 17.
New Heavens and Earth

17- For behold I create new heavens, and a new earth:
and the former things shall not be in remembrance,
and they shell not come upon the heart.

So this states that once the new Heaven and Earth are created
their shall be no memory of former things.
He will allow these thing to become forgotten
and never resurface. He will not search them out again.
It may even mean that He will allow these things to die.
