there is a famous poem (Chesterton?) that has the Father creating all these things for the amusement of the Son and that sounds about right to me

A joke that we already heard before and has often been repeated in our ears, eventually ceases to be funny.
A semi-snarky Chesterton quote:"Because children have abounding vitality, because they are in spirit fierce and free, therefore they want things repeated and unchanged. They always say, ‘Do it again!’, and the grown-up person does it again until he is nearly dead. For grown-up people are not strong enough to exult in monotony. But perhaps God is strong enough to exult in monotony…It may be that He has the eternal appetite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we."

Since I first read Orthodoxy, I’ve loved that passage. Actually, I love the whole book. If you haven’t read it, then run out and get a copy.

The last line works, too. “There was some one thing that was too great for God to show us when He walked upon our earth; and I have sometimes fancied that it was His mirth.”
