I Am Going To A Difficult Time And Am Wondering, Does God Punish Us By Sending Us Hardships As A Way Of Telling Us To Repent? Does He Send Hurricanes To Wipe Out Areas Because Of Sin Or Is It That Our Sin Causes Consequences And What Is The Official Church Teaching On This And Where Can I Find The Church’s Teaching On This? Pray For My Family.

Yes He does.and what a blessing it is! because those who offer the suffering from these disasters in attonment for their sins will atone at least part of their purgatory in this world rather than face a much greater and severe puragatory in the next world.

Wow Dawn, I’m sure that lots of your neighbors are struggling with the concept of suffering.

God definitely does allow suffering as a punishment (in the sense as a call to repent), but He also allows it as an opportunity to glorify Him. Remember the story of the blind man in the New Testament. He was blind from birth; Jesus cures him and then, the apostles want to know if it was his parents sin or his own that made him blind. Jesus says it was allowed to glorify God.

Peter Kreeft has a book on suffering that is very good.Making Sense out of Suffering.

All suffering is the result of either original sin or actual sin. However, God always will allow us to bring greater good from suffering–usually spiritual growth or redemptive suffering.

It is also an opportunity for us to aid our brothers and sisters. I hope your rebuilding is going okay? God Bless.

A lot of what happens is a result of natural law and consequence. A hurricane develops and hits the Florida coast. Thousands of homes are destroyed. God permits this but does not directly ordain the catastrophe as some kind of divine punishment.
We are all, however, punished on a personal level by original sin. Because of it, we are susceptible to disease, aging, suffering and death. We suffer ignorance, social discord, a lack of harmony between reason and passion plus a propensity toward sin and disobedience. By virtue of these factors, our earthly happiness is marred and compromised. In this, you could say God does judge our original sin but only insofar as a greater good can come out of it (such as personal merit and humility). Whatever evil is allowed by God whether it be man’s sin or a natural calamity, have faith that a greater good is being derived out of it. Having a hurricane hit Florida, for instance, would invite compassion and social justice as families are helped by other states and national unity is increased.

there are natural reprecussions that result from sin and disobedience…God certainly allows this…

God also disciplines us as a Father disciplines a child in whom he delights…

our sufferings purify us, can strengthen our faith and make us grow in character and holiness…it is amazing how God uses all things for good.imagine gold going through fire, the slag rises to the surface and is skimmed off…the gold is strengthened and purified…i think our sufferings do similar things…

and as was said we can offer up our sufferings and sacrifices in union with the perfect sacrifice of Christ in reparation for our sins and the sins of others…and for our intentions and intercessions…this is the idea of redemptive suffering…
