A lot of what happens is a result of natural law and consequence. A hurricane develops and hits the Florida coast. Thousands of homes are destroyed. God permits this but does not directly ordain the catastrophe as some kind of divine punishment.
We are all, however, punished on a personal level by original sin. Because of it, we are susceptible to disease, aging, suffering and death. We suffer ignorance, social discord, a lack of harmony between reason and passion plus a propensity toward sin and disobedience. By virtue of these factors, our earthly happiness is marred and compromised. In this, you could say God does judge our original sin but only insofar as a greater good can come out of it (such as personal merit and humility). Whatever evil is allowed by God whether it be man’s sin or a natural calamity, have faith that a greater good is being derived out of it. Having a hurricane hit Florida, for instance, would invite compassion and social justice as families are helped by other states and national unity is increased.
