Does God require penance from us?

My take on it is that WE need penance, to prevent our hearts from hardening against God, and to reduce the space between us and Him. (my personal thought, though, and if anyone thinks it needs correcting I’d love to hear it!)
👍

Why would we have the sacraments if we did not need something?

Of course we need it.

Its freely given by God to us (believers)

Yet, we also can not simply ignore this gift- and not want to open it up.

We are told what we can and cannot do and what pleases Him.

We are also told He Loves Us, and its not a one way street.

We must return this love

And we know that we can, He has given us every possible means to do this.

And yes, we are required to do these things, we ought to out of pure love, but God will even take the one who does it out of fear too.

He takes us as we are, but is not a Hippie God, that says ANYTHING GOES.

You can do what you want and you have nothing required of you.

heck, even atheists follow the golden rule.

What sets us apart, or set aside for Him?

He does require me as a beliver, as I said before

To do things.

How are you not required to do things as a believer?

Get me into that gig.
There are things we need to do to be closer to God. But He doesn’t need us to do things, because he doesn’t need

Montalban;

I think you are mistakenly using the word “require” to mean “need.”

God doesn’t need anything from us, but He most certainly requires many things from us.
It’s all in the terminology.

God continually loves us. For us to be with God all we have to do is to accept God’s love.

He’s not requiring us to do anything because he doesn’t need nor require us to do anything in the sense of need, yes that’s correct.

However getting back to the OP Catholics say that God needs to be satisfied. I’ve already cited the encylopedia that talks of him being injured.

I never said he did. Are you projecting?
Projecting wouldn’t even come into this. At best you’d be suggesting I’m straw-manning your argument, so you can’t even come up with the proper objection.

However, as pointed out, you said this…

Hellisreal:
He requires us to respond to Him, and that is the real issue.
If you meant something else then say so. Check the context I gave earlier re: Catholic encyclopedia saying God’s been injured

**He’s not requiring us to do anything **because he doesn’t need nor require us to do anything.
Thank you for endorsing same sex marriage, and abortion, murder, ect…
Love thy neighbor, keep the sabbath holy, Love your God, No need to apply.

WoW.,

Since when did the Orthodox church toss out this and the sacraments too?

I am all ears.

I can do what I want

Since God does not REQUIRE me to respond to this Love he FREELY gave

I hope Jesus Christ agrees with this bunk.

You’ve just been told the exact same thing now at least twice. Why don’t you just get to the part that you really disagree with? That there is temporal punishment for sin such that penance for us is necessary.

You’re a funny one! Go back a few posts where I cited Catholic encyclopedia about God being injured.

Here it is, 'cause you obviously don’t read all the posts before jumping in…

We need not dwell upon the possibility of the salvation of mankind or upon
its appropriateness. Nor need we remind the reader that after God had
freely determined to save the human race, He might have done so by
pardoning man’s sins without having recourse to the Incarnation of the
Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity. Still, the Incarnation of the Word
was the most fitting means for the salvation of man, and was even
necessary, in case God claimed full satisfaction for the injury done to himby sin (see INCARNATION).

How was God (who is perfect) injured?

Well at least you’re going for a *vox populi *now
Not so. I cant express what I would like to at times. Many here can, and they should be acknowledged by people that lack this ability. Like me.

It seems you cant express either.

Can you help me see your way of thinking?

For Catholics its part of punishment to rectify an injury done to God.

It’s all very legalistic. God’s the judge as well as the plaintiff and he demands satisfaction.

He *requires *it 🙂
He does require it, yet you ought to love him enough to want to do this of your own choice, as good things will flow if you have the Holy Spirit leading you to all truth

Montalban, if I was you in your denomination, and went to Divine Liturgy once a year or twice, and confessed to my Father confessor once or twice,

What would you say my motivation was?

That’s a straw-man argument. (not a projection 🙂 ) where you endeavour to re-work what I’ve said, and attack that.

That’s the problem. You’ve nothing between them! 😃
😦

Theosis at work folks…

Name calling.

Its okay, Montalban, I dont have a dog in this race.

I am not even a catholic now.

Thank you for humiliating me.

I read it the first time around. Do our sins sadden God?
That’s what the Catholic sources imply; he’s been injured. SO you can understand why I want absolute certainty when Catholics start talking about God needing/requiring something.
