Hi Chrystal,
This is a touchy and complicated question. It’s a good question, just complicated.

We have to be really careful when dealing with any sort of spiritual communication, because unfortunately, the bad angels dwell here on earth with us as well as our guardian angels.

God can communicate to us through dreams, but so can Satan so we have to be careful especially because Satan likes to give us “Godly” experiances to gain our trust but then as time moves on the communications start twisting and going against the bible.

If you’ve had dreams with communication and you are wondering where the communication is coming from you need to locate a Priest who has time to work with you to discern where the messages are coming from. No one here on this forum can discern for certain without knowing you.

Some general guidelines to spiritual communications

• God NEVER goes against the scripture
• God’s communication tend to leave the reciever with a sense of peace, where bad communications will leave the reciever with doubt, question, unease and so forth.

I strongly encourage you to get a copy of Authenticity: A Biblical Theology of Discernment, by Thomas Dubay, S.M. This is the most thorough Catholic work I know of that deals with matters of private revelation and interpretation. Dubay cautions all to be very wary of any perceived private spiritual knowledge, and teaches how to go about authenticating or debunking such.

Until one can be absolutely certain, preferably by way of confirmation by one’s spiritual advisor, that a dream is a message from God, it is best to presume it is not. The Lord has given us Sacred Scripture and the Holy Church to impart to us what we need to know for living Christian lives here on earth. If He should choose to speak in another way, He will make it abundantly clear, and it will stand up to criticism.

I hope this doesn’t violate forum guidlines. Since these were dreams and not actual visions or any direct messages from God, I thought it would be ok. Please delete the post if I’m mistaken. I don’t want to be banned.

Ever since I was a child I’ve had these random dreams that almost exactly mirrored future events. My first experience was when I was nine and I dreamt that there would be a rice crispy treat on my desk when I got to school. The next morning I was shocked when I actually got there to find my best friend had put one on my desk(I had no contact with her since my dream.). Another example is when I dreamt that a friend I hadn’t seen for several years would call me only to have that realized the next day. I’ve always wondered what this means. It’s all pretty mundane stuff. I have no control over it, and I certainly can’t make predictions when it comes to the future. I’ve experienced no great revealations through my dreams. It’s just weird.

Personally, I think that almost all of our dreams are just that - dreams.

However, as Sarah said, we have to be very careful because Satan is very tricky. I agree with Mary about reading Fr. Dubay’s book. He’s my favorite author. Very Catholic. Very readable.

That being said, yes, I do believe that God can come to us in a dream because it happened to me. I was going through a spiritual crisis. I didn’t dream of God; I believe He hid in one of the characters of my dream and the simple, little message He gave me (actually written down in a Christmas card in the dream) was exactly what I needed to hear at the time. I woke up immediately and just knew it was Him. (I’m not giving any other details because it was personal and I don’t want to be banned!)

I think that, if it happens, you just know that it’s Him. You know deep down inside. If you have any questions about if it was Him or not, or if the dream gives you a specific “revelation” or “mission”, then you have to find a good priest or spiritual director to talk with.

Even if you do receive a “revelation” of some sort, remember that the Lord very highly values obedience. So if a spiritual director tells you that it was just a regular dream, obey. If it is anything other, the Lord will come to you again, and you must go to your director again. Think of St. (Padre) Pio and the opposition he faced in his life on earth, and now he is a Saint!

If you have any questions about if it was Him or not, or if the dream gives you a specific “revelation” or “mission”, then you have to find a good priest or spiritual director to talk with.

That’s the best advice I can think of, too. Perhaps even in the Confessional, if you don’t want ot make an appointment.
