Often when someone experiences a tragedy others will say ‘God is testing your faith’. Is there anything in the bible or the teachings of the church to validate this? Or is it just some saying someone invented that got popularized

1 Corinthians 10:13 “No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it.”

This verse implies that any test may be something that God allows, but never beyond our means.

Does God directly test us? This depends on what is meant. But as per the passage provided by A Famulus, God does not tempt us with evil. Evil does not come from God and temptations to do evil are not from God. God may allow them to happen to test and thereby strengthen our faith, as he allowed the devil to torment Job.

Yes, underacloud is correct. God may allow bad things to happen but those bad/evil things are not from Him but the devil. I don’t why He ALLOWS but maybe so that we can learn 1 thing if not many things from the experience. Also, if we don’t learn anything and we keep making the same mistake, what does that say about our actions? I think God loves us enough to test our love for Him and see if we will be obedient enough to love Him back.

Hope that helps 🙂

To be a bit more accurate, I would say that God is not only “testing your faith” but he is also trying to “increase your faith” by imparting you grace. God is also trying to give you something good.

Faith is both a grace from God and a free response from a person. A tragedy that God allows may be an occasion when God intends to grant you more grace as well as to elicit the free response of faith from you. It is a time for your sanctification, a time to draw you closer to him, a time when he attempts to draw near to you. Indeed, he requires your free assent of faith, but he also supports it with his grace.

God is not like a cruel teacher who only seeks to “test” and see if you are at par with his standards. Rather, he himself grants you the grace to raise you up to that higher standard. He is not a harsh critic who would like to see if you might fail his criteria, but a father who wants his children to improve and helps them achieve better.

Being test every time

We are being test in every condition not only with a tragedy. When we are well we must thank God and when we are in a tragedy we must be patient but not to bellyache to God. İndeed Thank to God or whinge to God is a decision that is reponsible of humanbeing. Mankind is being test for his decisions good or evil.

I agree with this! 🙂

Oh yeah He does! A couple of month ago I met a man that seemed to be so perfect, like if he had been baked just for me with a recipe that excelled all dreams. I instantly smelled G-d was involved there. The thing had “G-d testing” written ALL over it. Turned out indeed that, had I wanted to be with him, I would have had to abandon one commandment, and I wasn’t willing to do that. I sensed the test from the get-go and it turned out to be one. Sometimes His tests are just too obvious though.

Each and every tragedy I experienced as a Child in my primary and high school years (losing a first cousin, losing a girlfriend, losing my first and only pup/dog, losing my father for seven years, losing someone I knew to murder, temporarily losing my Faith in Jesus at different times (the biggest tragedies of them all), losing another 7 year old cousin to epilepsy and the list progresses; at each time I “knew” through Jesus what had happened, the reasons these things had happened (most of all to bring the Love we have in our Souls felt and experienced for our Brothers and Sisters in Christ), the opportunities to open up our Hearts to Jesus (after all He chose to die for us and go through excruciating pain at a young age to forgive our sins) and to grow from these tragedies in His Love, Wisdom and Guidance.

It is a hard long road for those who do not open up their Hearts to Jesus during grief and through their lives asking for Healing for themselves and loved ones.

It is my belief that with some of God’s Children, they are called back and it is not caused by satan. It could be one’s Soul in Communion with God, The Holy Spirit and Jesus agreed upon before we are born here, that we only wished to experience, through God’s choices He gave us, a certain experience and certain time. In other situations for people, satan has intervened (tragedies) when no-one has prayed continually for that person during their lives (short or long). In other situations for His Children, I believe that diseases (through satan) continue and take lives (if no-one has prayed continually for that person) and/or His Will, that certain people linked to the family member who is ill or died tragically, will be given the opportunities to open up their hearts to Jesus through that person.

For instance, why are certain people born blind? Has not God given each of the people who have come into contact with that person who is blind (yet not spiritually blind) the opportunity to open their hearts, to love and feel for that person? Or for people who were born with defects, babies with abnormalities, holes in the heart and neurological diseases present at birth? I think of all the people who have come into contact with all of these beautiful children and people and their sufferings.

Mankind has loved, felt, grieved and learned so much from illness and tragedy; many a hard heart opened up to feel and know love. How could we have loved so deeply and learned so much without experiencing grief.

However, everything still all reverts to love and prayer that Jesus states in His Bible left to us and without one praying for healing; “ask and ye shall receive”; one’s journey is a hundred fold harder in coming to terms with one’s own losses./bereavement.

My Children’s Grandmother had three dying experiences over the past 12 months; the last time in hospital ten days ago, she was accepted/taken by Jesus and she had had enough. As she was unconscious, her Mother Gladys appeared in Heaven and told her “no, you are not ready and must return”. “Mum, Mummy, please” said my Children’s Grandmother. She awoke and recounted to my 22 year old daughter “you all have no idea here what is on the other side, there are so many lost souls up there”. I gave my Mother in Law Our Lady’s Holy Rosary card months ago to pray and read; these sat by her bedside and when she was dying, I prayed The Holy Rosary after my Mother in Law said she was ready to go by blinking her eye. I prayed and asked Jesus to free her from her pain (kidneys had gone) and within a few hours He took her.

What a worthwhile test the creator of the universe cooked up just for you.
