Does God want me to have a job?

I am looking for a job after years of being a SAHM, and it is rough going. My husband and I are currently separated, and are not sure where that is going, so I actually need a job.

My friend tells me that God wants me to have a job so of course if I keep working at it, I will get one. I am not positive about that. Maybe God doesn’t want me to have a job? Maybe He is wondering why I don’t do something else to make money?

From a theological point of view, it just doesn’t really seem to fit, this idea that God wants me to have a job so of course I will get one. Look at all the saints who wanted one thing and got another?
 
I’m not sure what you’re asking or wanting to hear. The Church’s doctrine is apparently that God wants you to refrain from sin and to help others, and that God leaves it to us to decide how to do those things.

So if paid employment is how you can best help others, then do so.
 
God likes to give us trials. A trial is where we are tested. It can be a test of Faith.

Jesus went on Trial.

I advise you make the Stations of the Cross. There are many blessings to receive by doing so. It starts with “Jesus is condemned to Death”–the end of the Trial.

View your unemployment as your cross. Offer it up to Jesus.

The Cross appears when we are not looking for it (Ask Simon of Cyrene). The cross is Jesus wanting us to be a little more like him, and to trust more in him. He is seeking us out. He is saying, “Come”.

BTW… I am unemployed.

If you need a job, you need a job. You do what you have to do. Sometimes it’s not a matter of theology.
 
No, I need to live, obviously, and I’m looking for a job, but it just seems weird for someone to say God wants me to have a job so I will get one. There are a lot of people who don’t get jobs, for thing, does God not want them to get jobs, and if so, why mightn’t I be in that group instead?

I’m sure my friend intends to be reassuring, but it sounds odd to me. Not to mention how many saints didn’t get what they needed and worked for, and I am very far from a saint!
 
Often times what we want is different than what we need. God, (we hope), wants our needs to be fulfilled, not necessarily our desires.

Aside from that, best of luck in your hunt for a new job! I will keep you in my prayers.

I think I figured out that what she is saying sounds like that prosperity theology idea, where God will make sure we all get rich because that is what he wants for us?

Just read your post. The two things that popped into my head were good literature on vocations and that book “What Color is Your Parachute.”

Also, I agree with you, I think. How can people know, all the way down to the specifics, what God wants for someone else? Are they projecting what they want for you? I don’t know. I know it says that God’s ways are so far above man’s ways…

But like I said, these are only my thoughts.

I was in your situation 30 years ago. God will help you overcome the fears and loneliness you may experience, please remember that. I went back to school and through much hardship got my license in nursing. I love nursing-and the love I always received from wonderful patients and co workers helped me weather the storms of life. This is why I am suggesting that you go back to school and choose a career instead of a job. My prayers are with you.

your uncertainty and confusion is very natural after being a stay-at-home-mom for some years.
It’s natural also that the thought is uncomfortable and probably scary…
May The Lord guide you, and assist you in getting work, if this is the best outcome for you and your family.

(We had a Harmony here in CAF back in 2008, she prayed on a thread for singles who thought they might not find a partner, I think she began the thread…I couldn’t help thinking of her, but another person perhaps)
