He wants us to live a happy life. But he has also given us the virtues to help attain that happy life. Note, that happiness is not reserved to Eternal life alone, he wants us to be happy here on earth. For example, some people think that living a happy life means holidaying so often and spending lavishly. This is not the happiness he calls us to live, even if we can afford to do that. We must also live a temparent and moderate life, enjoying the good things he has provided for us, but within reason.
For the Religious, well obviously, the life of a religious is different than that of a married person, for instance, if they vow poverty chastity and obedience, they can’t indulge in anything against the vows however they to can live happily and most are encouraged to stay fit and active.

Note that words like “joyous” and “peaceful” may not mean what we think they mean, and the Lord is always trying to teach us more deeply about what they mean.
Still, I believe that God does want us to live such a life. One approach to doing so can be found in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18.

If you look at Scripture, maybe we should be desiring a certain amount of suffering in this life.
Matthew 5:11 "Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Acts 5:40 and when they had called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.41 Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name.
1Peter 4:12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. 14 If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.
**James 1:2 ** Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.
God has promised peace and joy during trials, He has promised that trials will come, but H has never promised a smooth life.
