Does God want us to protect the environment?

Would it be wrong if I said “Because we don’t belong to this world, we don’t need to protect the environment?”
And is it because of people allowed to rule the nature that the environment is being destroyed?
 
Yes it would be wrong. You should read Pope Francis’ Laudato Si… and whatever some may tell you around here, it is an encyclical and it’s teachings are absolutely binding on all Catholics. We have a moral obligation to care for the environment. This isn’t a new teaching. It’s also found in the Catechism. God declared His creation “good” and entrusted its care to men.
 
Thank you, can you give me some Bible verse on protecting the environment?
 
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it.” Genesis 2:15
 
We are stewards of this world, God left it up to us to look after it. We need to preserve God’s Earth.
 
Yes, but such protection should be ordered toward the good of humanity. The good of other created things cannot be given priority over mankind. The earth and all that is in it is destined for the common good of mankind in all times. We can’t abuse it now to the detriment of future generations. That’s why the Catechism discusses this in the context of the 7th Commandment (abusing natural resources is like stealing from future and even current generations).

Genesis 2:15 (already said upthread) kinda says it all… what more do you want, if I may ask?
 
No I don’t think so. God entrusted the world to us so we should take care of it. We have been given it to live in for the time being, ie the duration of our life and the lives of those that come after us so we should take good care of it. We are greatly and sadly remiss at this. The earth is a gift, one which we have greatly abused, sadly.
 
Protect isn’t the best word in my opinion. Care is better. Protect suggest we need to keep it as is. But we are free to use the earth for our benefit since it was created for our benefit.

The environment is being destroyed by nature. What I mean is ultimately, according to scientists, the Earth will be destroyed. Christians agree but it is God’s will that the Earth be ultimately destroyed. That said we shouldn’t hasten its destruction.
