Does God want us to put the atonement of our sins ahead of helping the holy souls in Purgatory?

I pray for the souls in Purgatory every day and offer communions and other acts/sufferings for them. I feel guilty asking this because we, as Catholics, are to be charitable and the holy souls need us.

Somewhere I read that God wants us to make reparations for our sins as a priority so we can hope to join Him in heaven at the time of our death. Is this correct? Is it wrong and selfish to prioritize ourselves over that of the holy souls? Is there scripture that will help me understand His will?

Hi.

What we do is prioritize God. When we do His will, such thrust of our lives towards Him, affects the whole mystical body of Christ, including the departed. When we pray for our departed, our generosity toward them redounds to our own spiritual welfare. Putting God first helps us and everybody else.
