A friend of mine who was catholic has converted to Judaism. He says the a Messiah from the line of David has not been born yet. Jesus was not physically from the line of David as Jews beliive is required. His foster father Joseph was from the line, but his blood mother Mary was not.
My friend says the virgin birth is impossible as the Messiah must come from father’s side, the line of David.
He says the original Hebrew says Jesus will be born of a young woman - it does not say virgin. He and his spiritiual advisor are adamant on this.
It sort of sounds like young woman is what the source says but I don’t know Hebrew.
Can someone clarify?
***Hi, rien!
I know that it is simplistic to say: …just look at the source!
They have rejected Jesus as the Messiah though everything in Scriptures point to Him; they acknowledged that with what He said and did (changes Jesus introduced to the Jewish Doctrines) demonstrated that He made Himself equal to God; they even threatened to kill Him because He was a blasphemer who called Himself Son of God–so it is clear from their own statements that they (at least the religious leaders) understood that Jesus was claiming to be the Emmanuel (Immanuel) but rather than deepening their study of the Sacred Scrolls to verify His claims they held on to their conviction that He must be put to death.
During one particular time Jesus decided to test the religious scholars that were sent to Him: (paraphrased)
This fellow name John… with whose authority does he baptise?
These spiritual advisors of the poeple of Israel counseled each other: if we say that John the Baptist was baptising by his own authority the people would be enraged and would attackt us (they did not feel compeled to hold on to their religious beliefs; rather they feared suffering bodily harm); but if we say that John was sent by God (as attested by the prophecies in the Holy Scriptures) Jesus would ask us, “Then why do you reject his baptism?”
The only conclusion these scholars could come up with was that of playing dumb: “Daahhh… we donknow!”
But Jesus called their bluff and told them, "Then, I won’t tell you about my Authority!
This friend of yours and his spiritual advisor are facing such delimma: virgen birth, return of Elijah, conversion is preached, baptism is preached, healing is done and evil spirits are cast out, and Jesus’ Missionary work terminates at a time when the Jews from all over the world are called to the Temple: the prophecies are fulfilled by Christ!
Their position is: …if we accept the virgin birth then they would ask us why do you reject the Emmanuel? …hey, what about that technical thing with the virgin birth?..
I think that they hit catch 22 and don’t know it:
Option 1***
- Oops, we had the wrong definition all this time and early writers and scholars sought to avoid confusion so the virgin birth theory arose; so since the meaning should be “a young woman/girl,” done!, Jesus is Joseph’s legitimate child: hence, descendant of David: hence, the Messiah!
Option 2
- No, root-word does mean both young and virgin and, due to context and the support of other Sriptural passages, it must be virgin; since it is clear that Yahweh intervined directly in the Incarnation of the Word Jesus is the Son of God: hence, the Emmanuel: hence, the Messiah!
Maran atha!
